Pre-race routine:

Gathered up gear. drove to race site while eating breakfast in the car. set up transition area. Looked for my bike that I could not seem to find in the transition area.
Event warmup:

10 minutes of swimming in the lake.
Swim
  • 17m 35s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m / 100 yards
Comments:

I survived my first open water swim but it was not as pretty as I would have liked. I spent a lot of time with my head above the water and had to use my rest stokes (side and breast) more than I would have liked.
What would you do differently?:

I need to pratice a lot more often in open water. The pool is great but the swim is a lot different when there is not a wall every 25 meters.
Transition 1
  • 06m 31s
Comments:

OK... I lost my bike in the transition area. I could not find it. It the end I was so frazzled I was looking in the wrong row...I actually never found it before the swim and just prayed that when I got to the transition area afterwords with less bikes I could find it...and did...but I felt like a moron.
What would you do differently?:

I now understand why one uses ballons and such to find their bike. Also I should have given myself more time to get set-up. I was running a little late and it did not give me enough time to get properly set before the race.
Bike
  • 43m 8s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 17.30 mile/hr
Comments:

I rocked on the bike. I was passing people like crazy! It felt really good.
What would you do differently?:

I think this is a section I can really improve on. I feel very comfortable on my bike and I think it could really help improve my time.
Transition 2
  • 02m 32s
Comments:

I thought this was a very good transition. No problems
What would you do differently?:

I would locate my transition stuff a little closer to my bike area.
Run
  • 33m 34s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

OK running is my least favorite part of this whole deal. In training I built up to 45 minute runs and it paid off. I ran the whole way feeling pretty good about it. I am getting closer to my 10 minute mile goal. I was very happy.
What would you do differently?:

Just continue to work at it. I am finally starting to feel like a runner. I would like to work up to 60 minute runs and start building in intervals. I also need to do more bricks. I did not do any before this race.
Post race
Warm down:

I walked around the crowd taking advantage of every free sort of drink I could get my hands on. I also sat down and stretched. I short walk when I get home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I did not train as hard as I should have for this race although I am still very happy with my finish. I improved over last race and survived my first open water swim.

Event comments:

I guess they had a lot more participants than expected. Considering that it was very well organized.

Congratulations! I read your comments on the run with interest—I'm a new runner and it's my wild fantasy to get down to 10 minute miles. Sounds like the bike leg went great! Good luck on the next one...
