Does anybody have any advice on a good bike trainer that is compatible with Trainer Road and won't break the bank? There is SO much information out there, and I'm getting lost in the weeds. Thanks!

I got the Tacx Vortex Smart for Trainer Road quite happy with it.

I bought a used CycleOps Mangeto off craiglist for $75. Added a $60 Wahoo Blue SC magnetic speed and cadence sensor to my bike, and I was able do "Virtual Power Training" with TrainerRoad.

Scroll down this page, and there's a pull-down list of "dumb trainers" that are Virtual Power supported: https://www.trainerroad.com/virtual-power

Here you go, bullet-proof and if something does go wrong (unlikely) they'll still help you out on warranty: https://charlotte.craigslist.org/bop/6137497220.html  TR didn't use it on their VP page just because!

You'll need an ANT+ speed or speed+cadence item on the rear wheel such as a Garmin GCS10, if you don't already have something like it.  And a USB ANT+ dongle for the PC (again if needed).

What's nice about the KK fluid is that you can "calibrate" the tension with a coast down check to have it such that the virtual watts matches up well with a power meter at the same speed.

No need for any dongle if you use bluetooth (or dual) speed/cadence sensor(s), and run the TrainerRoad app on a phone or ipad.

I started with the Kurt Kinetic and virtual power. It worked great and is recommended by trainerroad.
