Swim
Comments: Nothing like starting in the second wave - watching the Elite Masters really makes you feel slow. Great start on the beach - run/wade into the lake and start swimming. I drafted for a bit off someone, but eventually moved out of the way of a guy who was going a tad off course. I had a good swim - just not used to cooler water. The swim was pretty good - just a little sidestroke here and there to make sure that I was aimed in the right direction and to recover a bit. What would you do differently?: I would *consider* getting a wetsuit - but I am glad that I didn't add that in to the race. It would have been one other thing to stress over since I had not trained in one yet. Other than that I would probably try harder to stay on someone's feet. Transition 1
Comments: Not bad - easy jog to transition, nice grass to run on. Had some problems clipping in to the pedals. Mostly because I wasn't paying attention. What would you do differently?: Left more towel to get the grass off my feet with. Paid more attention to clipping in. Bike
Comments: Much stronger bike than I thought. Very hilly course (well for central NC). Rained at the 8 mile mark for about 10 mins. Hard Rain. Good course overall though - challenging without being REALLY difficult. Helped the stronger bikers in the crowd. What would you do differently?: Not drop my H2O bottle. Transition 2
Comments: Running with bike was not good. I almost went down coming into transition area. I think that I was trying too hard because I happened to notice another racer behind me and wanted to get out of the way. I did dismount without incident, which is a change. What would you do differently?: Not pay attention to who was behind me. Run
Comments: wow. very tough course. Lots of rolling hills. Since I am a slower runner, I felt like I got passed by a hundred people, but it really didin't bother me at all. I was just chugging along, and was not killing myself, unlike some of the other runners. What would you do differently?: speed up :-) - in all seriousness I probably ought to have kicked up the pace a little more on the flats and during the last 2 miles. But I was tired and just wanted to run the whole way, so I am not unhappy with the safe choice. Post race
Warm down: Walked around and drank lots of accelerade. Felt sick afterwards because accel. doesn't agree with me. Of course that didn't matter when I grabbed it. Ate a bannana and 3 oreos. They had Red Beans and Rice, but the thought of it was not pleasant. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of speed while running. Just need to spend more time running and doing the weekly speed work. Event comments: I set out to give it 100%, and I did. I wanted to run the entire 10k and I did so I am happy. I'll be here again next year. Last updated: 2004-10-02 12:00 AM

Powerbar + some H2O. Racked up the bike, setup the transition area.
Walked around and talked to some friends. Did a couple of minutes in the lake to see what the water temp was and to warm up a bit. Didn't bike or run - was a little nervous and was more focused on being relaxed.
