Skiing in New York

From NYC it's not *that* far to Vermont. For a weekend, it's definitely doable. Up friday night, ski sat, half of sunday, back into the city sun eve.

I've skied Killington and Pico in VT. Most of my time at Pico though, as my roommate in college lived ~15 minutes from the mountain.

Depending on what you're used to, it's a bit icier than say Colorado/Utah, but certainly very skiable.

you could also head straight up 87 and hit lake placid. whiteface mtn. is there and you can also hang out in the olympic village. there are lots of ski resorts in the adirondacks/northern new york. if you didn't want to drive that far, there are a few places in massachusetts that you could check out, too. i don't really know what's in connecticut...i've never gone skiing there.

There's good x-country skiing from Albany west toward Syracuse.  Probably two to four hours depending on the location.

There are also several downhill areas in the Poconos in Pennsylvania, about two hours west of NY.  Check out  Jack Frost www.jfbb.com.  It's our favorite.  Be aware, though, if your coming from out west,  these are really hills and not mountains.  But it's better than nothing.

The closest places are Ski Windham and Hunter Mountain. They are about a 90 min. drive south of Albany, in the Catskill mountains. Those are pretty much the only two in that area.

Thanks for all the info. I'll definitly do a little more research now that I have a few starting points. I've been spoiled by the Rockies, but I went through college with Virginia skiing so New England is probably a step up from that.
