I went to Guelph today with my g/f, I drove the sprint Du bike course then went into the conservation area parked my car and took my bike out and rode the course. Man that course is a lot hillier then I originally expected. At the turn around point, when you go down the hill cross a bridge then that next uphill! man that almost killed me, I considered getting off and walking my bike up after half way up the hill but I pushed on and made at a REALLY slow speed huffin' and puffin'. Then there was another uphill close to the end that was pretty tuff too.

But, I made it the whole 19km's and in an alright time (I think). I wasn't really sure where the official bike portion starts or finishes in the actual Duathlon, but I parked my car down by the bathrooms by the beach and started there. It took me about 43 minutes from there to the turnaround and back. Is that a decent time? btw there was some stron headwinds at times.

I just signed up for GL1 sprint. I'm looking forward to comparing my results from last year.

newbie13 - 43 is a decent time for the bike course. If you have more time on the hills before the race, get in that low gear and keep at it!

gasping- where abouts does the bike start? and yes I realized today I need ALOT more practice on hills, I have a decent size hill near my house and I'm gonna ride up and down it over and over untill i'm more comfortable on hills.

The bike starts/ends at the intersection close to where you started at the beach washrooms. The transistion area is located on the lawn across the road from the washroom.
Have fun on those hills.

Weather looks really good so far for next weekend. Keep our fingers crossed!

Did the run route yesterday and it's really nice through the park....some hills though.....few spots with shade....it really is a nice venue.

I noticed one of your 2007 goals was to run all the way up the hill from the swim to the transition. This is my first time doing Guelph Lake (although I swim, bike and run there alot), and I was wondering what my strategy should be regarding that hill - run up so my swim time is better; or take it easy going up, so I'm raring to go on the bike. I'm actually only during the tri-a-tri next week - just coming back from almost a year off due to injury; BUT I have registered for Belwood. Quite excited about it.

Are you talking about me?  It is one of my goals to run up the entire hill.  I usually poop out about 3/4 of the way up, just short of the road.  I have no idea if its best to walk it or run it (strategy wise).  I'm just not that knowlegable.  I don't think people win a triahtlon based on their swim times, and I guess it would depend on how strong you are on the bike ect ect.  I usually find that after my swim, the time I take in transition is enough rest that I am recovered adequately for the bike.

For those of you that have done this race before, how do you feel about that hill? maybe its just my own personal weakness

Thanks you guys. Yes, I was referring to you Elly. The swim time thing is my own personal goal since I just learned to swim 3 years ago and went from the 3rd last out of the water to sort of middle of the pack of women at Lakeside last weekend. I know I can check my time when I step out of the water but I REALLY want to see a respectable time on "paper". I think I've read that you CAN win a race with good transition times though. My husband was more than 1 minute ahead of me last weekend but in the finish was only about 20 seconds because of his transition. ANYWAY, back to the hill, I think I am going to attempt to run up the hill at a easy pace and see what happens. Off to Guelph this morning do bike the Olympic route and do a long swim.

I have done the venue 3 times now.. great venue (also my local venue so I may be biased) that hill is a bit of a challenge my fist Tri it stopped me dead last one i managed to run the whole thing, IMHO every 10-20 seconds you can shave is worth it. I agree with Elly... to a point you don't win a race in the swim but every minute you can gain in any leg is one you don't have to try and make up later.
