Hi all ... just curious, what is the best thing to wear for race conditions in terms of shorts? ... ideally there would be something that is suitable for swim, bike, run? I thought of bike shorts but wouldnt the padding be uncomfortable for swim and run?

Tri shorts, like these by Zoot, are designed with a thinner pad that absorbs less water, making it appropriate for all three sports:

Better yet is an all-in-one race suit that incorporates a top, makes T1 a lot faster if you don't have to struggle with a top while you're wet from the swim:

BTW, BTers get 15% of at Trisports using the coupon code "begtri."

What I've always wondered is, for longer races such as 1/2 IM and IM, do people change into cycling shorts for the bike? I imagine 112 miles in tri shorts would suck pretty bad.

Maybe we can get one of the experienced Ironmen to reply, but it's my understanding that the Ironman-distance events provide changing tents for participants. Not so sure about the Half IMs.

I haven't done an ironman but completed 3 half-ironman races and don't change clothes. Also, the 6 friends I have in my triathlon click who have completed IM Moo and other IM races don't change clothes during the IM race...but that is a personal preference thing and the extra time you'd spend switching gear in the changing tent in an all day race really wouldn't change the race outcome that much.

I vote for comfort 100% of the time.

I gotta post my experience with the zoot 1-piece suit.

The downside of the 1-piece suit for the male triathletes among us is that if you want to fix/move around the family jewels during the bike for comforts sake....it's a little more difficult to do that with a one piece since vs just zoot's bike shorts since the one piece zipper stops pretty far above the belly button.

Also, if you want take off your one-piece suit to go to the bathroom after bodymarking say good bye to the nice suit because the "permanent" marker on your arms will rub off on the top of your suit. My white 1 piece zoot suit looks like an adventure racing jersey with all the black marks/streaks on it from taking the thing off to go to the bathroom after bodymarking.

I'm no longer going to race in one piece suits because of these reasons. I'm hitting myself in the head for dropping $90 on a suit that I can't get conveniently comfortable in when needed and that gets freggin' black marks on the jersey when it's taken off after body marking to go potty.

Oh, one of my favorite racing shorts? Desoto. They are relatively inexpensive and are SUPER comfortable.

Definitely, you wouldn't want to swim in the regular bike shorts. The tri shorts have a minimal padding (kind of a thin fleece). Besides Zoot's, I would recommend the De Soto Tri Shorts and Power Tri shorts. In my experience, they seem to be the most popular.
