Subject: building your own fork mount for inside the car
I was thinking of purchasing a few fork mounts and screwing/bolting them into a 2 x 4 plank for inside of my car. I want to avoid a hitch mount or roof rack to reduce excess gas guzzling. I know I can stand my bike up inside the back with the seats folded down when the front wheel is removed. Has anyone else done this and if so, do you need to do something to keep the back tires aligned?

Any thoughts? Thanks!

sadly I have been thinking about doing the exact same thing and mostly because of the whole gas price going up

except I would have to take both wheels off, but it seems that it would be possible, hopefully someone may have tried it

Here is a mount that you can attach on a board, it should work for you.

This is common in Honda Elements. Friends of mine have their's set up with that. To keep the rear wheel from sliding, a somewhat rough doormat made of rubber uinder the rear wheel should do it.

I do this in a light truck but have thought about doing this in an car also. I thought about bolting the fork mounts to a larger piece of plywood or something to prevent the bikes from sliding around. I believe the alternative would be to bolt the 2x4 to the back of the fold down seats.

What kind of car do you have that allows the bike to stand up right?

I have two mounts similar to the one vonschnapps cited mounted to a single 1X6 decking board, and use that to carry two bikes in the back of my RAV4. Don't do anything to keep the back wheels aligned as they seem to stay put by themselves. If I felt I needed more stability, I would just bungie the bikes to the cargo tiedowns in the bed of the vehicle.

I<3 my RAV4.

Thank you so much for the replies! I found that performance link last night and got 2 to try it out. I have a 1998 ford explorer sport that with the seats folded down fit the bike easily standing up, but this will secure the bikes. I am dying for this car to die so that I can get the Honda Fit, which I know also fits two bikes standing up, with seat folded down. The 15mpg difference in gas savings will be awesome. But for now, it is the explorer. I just cannot justify starting another car payment when the ford is all paid off. We only use it to carry the bikes. Our other car is a mini cooper! I think this will work out fine. My bike is probably worth more than the explorer right now
