Subject: Bursitis on the sit bones

I believe i have bursitis on my sit bones.   More specifically, only on the right side....for whatever reason.

I'm a new cyclist (only biking a couple months) and i just changed to a Adamo saddle last month.   The first week or so of riding the Adamo, my butt was extremely sore.   I've read this is normal so i wasn't particularly worried.

However, while taking a shower last night, i noticed some swelling on the right sit bones and a little bump....which is really sore (not painful, but sore).   After reading the net a bit, i'm pretty sure it is bursitis caused by cycling.

Most treatment that i've read about is ice, rest, and NSAIDS.   Now, i have my first Tri next weekend and another at the end of September.....so rest is really out of the question.   I iced it last night and took an Alleve this morning.   It doesn't bother me at all, only when i get on my bike.   Sitting in a chair is ok and nothing else bothers it.

So i'm wondering what the common belief is around here about working around bursitis.  I'm sure this is fairly common and something alot of people experience.Can anyone give me some advice on how to work around this while i'm training for these Tri's the next month or so?

lol, ya it's more of a soreness and discomfort than pain.   gonna rest it till Monday and do another ride and then take off till my race next Sunday.   hopefully that'll help a bit.

Hello xmann.
I've been a competitive cyclist for around 12 years now and put in anywhere from 4,000 to 6,000 miles a year.  I ride almost daily when not training for triathlons.  So I'm very familier with saddle sores or in your case bursitis, which may be one in the same.

I too ride the Adamo on my tri bike and developed saddle sores on/near my sit bones.  I treated this like I've treated other saddle issues from different bikes/saddles.  Here's what I do...

- Keep saddle area (taint) clean and cool. 
- Remove shorts immediately after riding.
- Never wear the same pair of shorts more than once without washing them.
- Always use chamois cream like Assos cream.  Apply liberally.
- After showering I powder my "area" with antibacterial baby powder.
- At night I apply Tea Tree oil to any saddle sore I may have.
- What has worked the best at eliminating saddle sores is to raise out of the saddle every 10-15 minutes for a few pedal strokes to get the blood flowing and give relief to the tender areas. 

Don't let the saddle issues keep you from riding.  The soreness will heal if you continue to treat the area and keep yourself clean and dry.

thanks for those suggestions.   have a couple questions though.....

is body glide the same as the chamois cream?   i have body glide, do i use that the same as i might chamois?   if not, what is the difference?

secondly, i only feel discomfort when sitting on something very firm right on the right sit bones.   sitting in a chair or walking around i don't even notice the soreness.   yesterday i took some Alleve and iced it last night when i got home.   does that sound like a good strategy for the bursitis (i'm guessing that is part of the issue).

i'm not close to getting frustrated or backing down on biking.   i'm giving it a rest for a couple more days.   but Monday i'm gonna ride for about 20 miles and take off till my race next Sunday.   sores be damned, i'm not stopping

I'll take a stab at the first one - no, body glide and chamois cream are not the same.  You can get the chamois cream just about anywhere, but I've been using the Performance Bike house brand with good results and it's pretty inexpensive.

No.  Body Glide is nothing like chamois cream.  You need straight up chamois cream, which can be found at most bike shops and major sports stores.  When you do buy some and use it slather it on good.  Don't just rub a small amount on yourself.  Glob it on.

Is your strategy enough?  Maybe...but most likely no, not enough, if you're gong to be putting in consistent long mileage.  Ice and inflammatories are good, but if the sores turn into boils then you're looking at a doctor visit and several days, if not weeks of recovery.  I would be as proactive as you can and avoid letting the problem get worse.
