Just wondering from volunteers or sherpa's from last year's race if any of you all did the practice swims? My husband and another cheerleader that is coming would like to get in and do the swims but I wasn't sure if that was open to non race participants. Any ideas?

I walked right up and jumped in with everyone else last year.  There didnt seem to be any type of system controlling access to the river ... wristbands or anything like that, so its worth a shot.

Not to hijack, but will they have the practice swim set up where you can do less than the entire course?  Just curious given that it is a one lap course rather than two.

The practice swim is actually at the swim finish, not the swim start. You can swim up for as long as you want then turn around, totally up to you & how long you want to swim.

Last year the practice swim freaked me out.  I jumped in and swam up river against the current for 30 minutes.  When I looked back, I was only about 200 yards from where I'd started.  I turned around and headed back and it took me 2 minutes!  Fortunately the current subsided (either on it's own or with the help of the Corps of Engineers) and they also changed the swim start so only about 1/3 was against the current.

Back to the OP, like others have posted, there is no checking of wrist bands.  Besides, it's a public river.  :-)

I just responded as my husband...oops.

I'm volunteering during the Saturday swim practice. If you see me, come say Hi! Not sure where I'll be positioned yet.

...also haven't received any detailed info on your questions, or else I'd certainly help you out. The only thing I know is we're securing your belongings while you swim and that we'll have Gatorade and water available for you.
