Ok, over the past year i have purchased a road bike and been racking up some miles on it.  A few weeks ago I decided to do my first sprint tri.  I was never a dedicated runner but compeated in a few races.  Mostly 5k and a few 10 k...  About a year ago I was able to run a 7:30 mile for a 5 k.  Since I started training for my tri I noticed how terrible my run is.  I am averaging a 10 min mile and 3 miles feels like forever.  I am actually have trouble running the time for the workout I am following.  The swim is comming around and I think I will "smoke" the bike section.  But I run like an old man..  What should I be doing to increase my time over the next 4 weeks...

I know the run is in me but I just cant seem to get it back...

And I did gain about 10 pounds over the past year.  (yea, I like beer,,,)

Thanks=

run more often.. even if short in duration. Frequency will make you a better runner. Eventually, speed work. Bottom line is more miles. There's just no other way to get there.

Well, 10 pounds will certainly slow you down.  Also, I would caution that "smoking" the bike will only hurt you on your run.  You have to strike a balance between the two.

I don't know what else could cause you to slow down so much, but to improve, I would suggest running....a lot.  As I'm constantly reminded, consistancy is the only way to improve over the long run.

Anyway, good luck with it!  Remember to have fun; the number will come in time, but it's not worth it if you don't enjoy it in the process!

are you noticing the slow down on your regular training runs, or is this only during bricks?

Well one of the reason I stoped last year is that my achille's was bothering me.  I noticed that my shoes were partly to blame.  I started back slow in fear of the injury.  Also change my shoes .. So far so good.  Did a 40 min run the other day and just a little stiff in the morning.  I guess I dont want to re-injure so I started running SLOW a few weeks ago. i just cant seen to get the speed back.  Well its only been 2 weeks and I have 4 to go....  But I need to find a balance as I want to be injury free race day.  I dont care how I feel the day after!!!
