OK...here are some guidelines and some info to narrow it down...

I live in Alabama

Don't want to swim in the ocean (salt water makes me gag...can't help it)

I want to do it before July 1st

Was thinking about  Lawrence, KS....(graduated from KU) anybody familiar with this course?

 OK...let'er rip.

GO JAYHAWKS!!!  Obviously I'm a KU grad as well and am trying to work up the nerve to race the Kansas HIM as well.  Maybe I'll see ya out there.  If you're from Lawrence then you should be somewhat familiar with Clinton Lake and the roads out to the lake.  Windy would be my bet.  There are some race reports on BT from people who raced it this year. They are very helpful.  http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/directory/link-detail.asp?linkid=17315

And welcome to BT!!!

We're in GA and have found it harder to find a summer HIM.  We like Gulf Coast in May, but it's in the ocean.  The others that come to mind before July 1 are:

White Lake in North Carolina- done by Setup Events, great race organization, swim is in a lake, I hear it's a great race but have not done it.

Rock N Roll Man in Macon, GA- I've heard it's hot and hilly, but GA Multisports puts on a great race.

I assume you'll pay less with these 2 races since they are not 70.3.  And they might be a bit closer depending where you are in AL.  Good luck and if you decide on an ocean swim, I'd highly recommend Gulf Coast HIM! Also South Carolina HIM in September is a good one too!

I can speak for the only one I have done.  http://www.buffalospringslaketriathlon.com/bslt.php   I did it in 2000, so I don't know if the quality has remained the same since then.  I plan on doing it again in 2009 unless someone on this thread recommends one better to you that is close to Oklahoma.

With that being said, I believe that if they were having a HIM in the town of my alma mater, I might have to choose that one.  Just as an excuse to drink some beer and have some cheese fries at Eskimo Joes.

For a really early season race you might consider the inaugural 70.3 New Orleans race.
