Subject: First post... and it's a basic as they get

I hope I'm not rehashing a common question - I did do a cursory search.

Okay, I train pretty regularly... but not with much organization, e.g. I bounce from cycling to running as intrest dictates. I'm in decent shape, e.g. run a 20 minute 5k, 42 minute 10k; cycling is probably about the same. But I really have no idea how to combine my running and cycling training - I want to train more... but there are only so many days in the week and I don't know how to best combine the two...

So, is it better to ride then run - immediately after, e.g. ride 20 miles, hop of the bike and run 5. Or (because of scheduling) is "okay" to ride in the morning then run in the afternoon?

Thanks for any guidance you guys (the unisex use of guys of course) can provide!

- Mark

1.  Depends on your schedule.  My training plan has me run, swim, and bike each 3 times a week.

2.  Better, not really.  But a "brick" workout at least once a week is desirable, but not every day.

3.  Not only is this "ok", your body will thank you for it.

First, welcome.  Second, you are very fast so do not undersell yourself.

BOth multiworkout option are great.  Do both.  Ride then bike so you get used to the feeling in your legs.  Split them up so you can do longer rides and longer runs or so you don't have the "brick" sensation in your legs.  I can only train once a day as that is what my family and work allow.  So many of my work outs are either swim-bike or bike-run bricks.

Good luck and have fun.

I just went through this transition myself.  What kind of swimmer are you????  Going into the fall/winter gives you perfect time to work on your biggest weakness.  It's great that you are reasonable biker/runner.  That is where the tris are won and lost.  I got pretty good on the bike, since I was often injured by the run.  Bike run bricks are good if you are young and don't have many injuries.  For an old guy like me who has had a lot of knee issues, I think I will minimize my brick workouts.  I have run marathons and know very well how to run on tired legs.  Other than the perceived physiological advantages of doing bricks, they do enable you to get two workouts in without setting aside two blocks of time.

The biggest learning is that you will need to separate the important workouts for the run and the bike by a day or so, since they use some muscles in common and are leg focused.  Other than that, there are a lot of formal programs you can use here on the site.  I am not so formalized and have a family.  I workout based on available time and try to find an hour here and there and decide which sport based on a rough approximation of the time raced in each sport (more time cycle, about even between run and swim since swim is my weakness).  You will find that swim mixes well with either sport since it is mostly aerobic and if anything helps loosen your muscles and strengthen your core.

Other than that, welcome!

Wow... that was quick (already loving this site) - thanks. My schedule makes the bricks tough during the week (gotta be back from the gym in time to help get the kids off to school) but the weekends, it flips - easier to do a brick. So, it seems my schedule will not hurt - could even aid in the routine.

You've motivated me - I rode this morning.... now I'm heading out the door to run!

Thanks again.

Splitting up the the workouts at different ends of the day will be best for each exercise. Though if you can get a brick in, once a week or 2 that would be good too.

Just back from running - felt as good or better than the same run (distance/pace) without the morning ride.

I feel like I have just been given a few more days in my week!

Thanks again!
