When I purchased my bike, the LBS installed Profile Jammer Gt’s  for me.

My arm distance where I hang on to the jammers feels just about right, however my forearms rest in the pads at about midpoint between my wrists and elbows.  It seems like it might feel more stable and comfortable if the pads where adjusted back toward my elbows a little bit.   Also, my elbows feel too close together which makes my shoulders roll toward the front and down a little bit.

My question is;

Should I try adjusting the pads outward and backward so they feel better or just get used to the feel of being down on the bars in this medium position?

Thanks in advance.

The closer your elbows are to each other, the smaller that parachute you've created with your arms and chest is. Think about how much air you're catching with that open space. Do you really want a larger parachute mouth as you're biking?

From what I've read, where the pads are is purely a matter of preference, adjust this to your liking.

I've goofed around with my aero-bars over the past couple of seasons and generally found that the more I adjust them out, the slower my times, particularly over an olympic distance triathlon. Finally found a happy medium, but they are closer than I thought I'd ever get comfortable with. Just took psending a lot of time in them to get over it. Good luck.

Thanks,  thats the kind of answer I was looking for.  Real world results.

I have my pads positioned so that my elbows are directly supported - I find it a more relaxed position as it's supporting more load than just having the pads under my forearms. I think it's entirely a personal preference, but I definitely feel like I have better steering control and leverage by having the pads further back.

It's true that keeping your arms & elbows tucked in close together is more aero, and as long as you are comfortable enough and it doesn't affect your performance/breathing by limiting your chest expansion then you're okay. I was comfortable enough with a previous setup, but when I changed aerobars 1/2 way into last season, I moved my elbows and forearms apart a bit more and I had much less strain, more comfort and no change in my TT times.

Thanks for the reply, good information for sure.

I'll second what sty said above.  I've been playing around with pad width a lot, and it seems that it is basically a matter of finding the right compromise between a narrow face presented to the relentlessly oncoming wind and having 'room' enough to breath without too much constriction.  As for front-to-back adjustment, I haven't noticed any real difference in overall speed associated with this, only comfort, so I put them where it is most comfortable (for me, close to but slightly in front of my elbows).
