Subject: new race wheels or tri bike

So I unexpectedly have about $1,500 of disposable income.  Do I get a sweet pair of race wheels or do I get a tri bike.

I currently have a Kuota Kharma Ultegra (road bike) and it suits me just fine.  I am doing a HIM this year and eventually will be doing an IM.  I love the sport and essentially bike to train for racing.

Is having a nice set of wheels on a road bike w/aero bars better then having an entry level tri bike?

I'd go for the new bike.   Race wheels are great, but new ones are ridiculously expensive for the amount of use they get.   Get the new bike, then rent the wheels for the one race per year that really means something to you.

New Bike..but if I was buying a tri bike you get the best bike for your money with a bit more maybe $2-2800 you can get carbon with mostly ultegra parts.

I have sweet Zipp 404s with power tap I bought off ebay at a great price..not sure they are worth it and it is one bike investment I'm have a little regret about them.

You have the ~$2000 Kuota Kharma Ultegra? Carbon? Nice bike.

really excited about buying some fancy "fast" wheels a week or two ago, but convinced myself otherwise because I don't think they're worth the money. I'll stick to my heavy, bomb-proof mavic stock wheels.

I would keep the bike, invest in a nice set of aerobars and a high-quality fitting, maybe a fast forward seet post, etc. Or sell the Kuota and buy a $2-3000 all out tri-bike.

Do you need to spend the money right away?  Unless you really like racing on a road bike, if I were you I'd save (sorry!) up for a carbon tri bike instead of buying wheels for my roadie.  I have an '08 P2C and absolutely love it.  Paid $2200 plus tax, which is a pretty standard price, I think.

I still like my roadie for group rides, but LOVE the P2C for solo rides/time-trial efforts.
