Due to an unfortunate bike accident 2.5 weeks ago, I was unable to do my first HIM at Eagleman. I am trying to plan my season for next year so I have something to look forward to as I continure my recovery. I was thinking about doing an early season HIM and debating between FL and New Orleans. I have read many of the race reports, but I wanted to see if anyone has any prefrence to these races?

I've done both & I suggest New Orleans.  New Orleans was the most fun I have had in my 3 years of racing tri's. This will became the most popular 70.3 very soon!!!!! My wife & I will be there again next year. Plus, the Florida run course is terrible.

I have been considering Florida. Can you be more specific about why the run course is terrible?

This is from my RR last month regarding the run.  It's as bad as everyone says it is.  One thing I didn't mention below is that the trail part of the run is really uneven.  A woman in front of me face planted because she stepped in a hole in the road.

"3 loops through what people have called "The Gateway to Hell" You start off in the shade of the exercise path, just to get your hopes up. There is an aid station and lots of people cheering and you think, not bad. Then about .25 down the path, you turn left into the blazing sun, no shade. You are on the asphalt for about 1 mile until you go "off road" for 2.5 miles where you can smell the grass baking into hay on every loop, until you turn back onto the exercise path for the last .75."

Plus-the finish in Jackson Square in NO is second to none. The most people I've ever seen at a finish line. We're going back!!!!!!!

I had a friend do NO earlier this year and he said it was the best race he has done as far as the course, spectators, etc.  (not sure which other races he has done, but he has done several).

His only complaint is that they were out of water and gatorade and ALL of the stations on the bike route when he went through.  He said there were people off their bikes picking up all of the thrown down bottles looking for some with water left in them.  That is unacceptable at any triathlon, especially a HIM distance.

I think this was the first year for this race, so I imagine the water issue will be corrected next year.
