Subject: Hives from biking?

Anyone get hives when biking long?

I rode my first century a few weeks ago and got hives on my upper thighs (below my shorts, though).  Every ride since this (7 rides), more hives.  They are not hugely uncomfortable (just annoying) but it's very odd.  So far, I've been able to eliminate my during-ride drink(s) and nutrition and different pairs of shorts as the problem because it happens every ride and I've eliminated at least one of them on every ride.

The best I can find from the internet is that some people get hives from exercising and from sunlight.  I've never had this problem before, despite living my whole life in Georgia and riding/running regularly in the dead heat of summer here.

I'm concerned because they seem to be getting worse with each ride.  Yesterday, they moved up from my ankles to my outside calves and I think they might be on my scalp (it's really itchy).

Any thoughts?

I took some Claratin this mroning and will continue this week to see if perhaps a systemic antihistimine will help.  Benadryl helps a little, but knocks my out and makes me dehydrated (bad for biking in the heat).

Just reading it now the one thing that comes to mind is: Is it localized to just your legs or other body parts?  If just legs, what do you use to shave your legs (product) and have you changed it recently?  What about soap (changed it recently or since last summer)?

I used to get a heat rash on my neck when I was a kid and had long hair.  Not hives, I know, but now that I have short hair, I don't get that anymore.

I shave my legs with the body soap.  I did try some "moisturizing soap" while we were at Disney because that is what they had in the hotel.  But Doug went and bought me some Dial because the moisturizing soap was too oily for me.  I've not used the moisturizing stuff in 2 weeks.  I'm back to the Dial that I've used since I was a kid.

It could be the heat, though.  I'm not acclimated to it since I'm in the office all day.

since its under the shorts have you changed anything in the laundery recently? (ie detegent fabric softner) My dad and sister both get rashes from certain laundryn soaps. So they don't buy those brands.

Sorry - I meant "under" as in "the part of the leg that is not covered by the shorts" which makes it doubly weird.

Look up polymorphus light erruption or PMLE.
Never had it before but went to Cancun, used sunblock and did not get much sun or burned (I'm irish) and I got it bad!
Heat rash is often a mild case. It is your immune system attacking the pigments pulled out in your skin from the sun. It's sounds strange but after going to my GP and getting a small does of steroids it got worse. Went to a dermatologist to find out what it really was and got much larger doses of prednisone for a week and it went away.

If this is it, you'll notice it only shows up in exposed (to sun) areas, probably gets itchy with a hot shower. I got so bad that it looked like a red blotchy rash when I would itch it. I went to the dermatologist because my feet were on fire sitting at work and couldn't take it. What I learned is it's real common. I am curious if you know your blood type because if it's O then you have a hyperactive immune system and I will bet that is what it is.

No, my blood type is A positive.  I think it's the heat because now that it has started to cool off a little here, I'm not getting the hives even though my rides are just as long or longer.
