Subject: Portland Tri - wetsuit?

I am planning on doing the Portland tri, but after completing my first Sprint this weekend, I'm really thinking I'm going to want a wetsuit to swim the Willamette. I checked their website and I don't see much info regarding who to go to for rentals or even anything mentioning wetsuits (to protect myself from the river). Any ideas where I should be looking? Am I totally nuts for risking my life to swim that river?

For the rental question, locally you can tri Athletes Lounge in Portland. I use Wetsuitrental .com out of Washington State. I have used them twice now. I already have received my wetsuit for the Mid-Summer at Blue Lake on Aug. 2nd. I have not swum in the Willamette so I am not much help with that info.

I swam it last year. No big deal. Everyone wore a wetsuit, but then again it was a triathlon. The temperature is warm enough to swim w/o one if you'd like.

I swam it last year and would recommend wearing one FOR SURE unless you're from a swimmer's background.

Swimming is the hardest event for me by far & I wouldn't venture into that cold Willamette River without one. It's already been suggested where to look for the rentals...Good luck!

I am a swimmer so you are probably a better resource for him on swimming w/o a wetsuit. Low 60's for 1500m or less is not an issue for me. The current temperature is 70-71
