I was thinking about spending $1000-$1500 on biking gear. Here are the options:

1. Upgrade the Bike itself. Either with the best Tri Bike or Road bike I can get for the money (probably gently used on ebay)

2. PowerTap for current bike to get the benefits of power training.

I am relatively new to triathlon and I do understand and have read extensively about power training. My current bike is Trek's lowest end model (1000SL).

Would I get more benefit from a better bike? Or from the powertap to start training with power?

Thanks!

if it were me, id get a new bike.

not saying your going to get more benefit from it....I would just rather have a new bike......

sell the trek, add the proceeds to your purchase budget.....

get a PT next year....

I agree,.,
If you look around you can get a heck of a deal with that budget on some 08 models.
   I just got a Cervelo P2sl for $1100 and I love it..
Best of luck to ya..

i too would get the bike first.

get a bike that is not going to hold you back (not saying the trek is a bad bike, but if you at the point where you see the benifits from the PT, get a bike that will put you in a position to take advantage of where that can take you.

maybe check out a good used alum frame, the P2sl, blue T16/T14, felt S22 or 32 (or whatever the numbers are for those), something like that, sell the trek, and see if you can swing a frame and used wired PT (can be found for 350-500).

Assuming that you don't have a decent bike already, then the answer is given... you need a bike before you can use a PT anyway. If you do have a bike that fits you well, then the answer is not that clear... depends on how old of a bike you already have, what condition is it in, etc.

Before buying a bike, remember to get fitted so you're not spending money on something that will not do you much good....

Can you elaborate on "relatively new"? What is your current MPH average on flat course sprints and olympic events? Unless you are up in the 21MPH+ average range, more time in the saddle is going to help more than either. I wouldn't even think power tap unless you are 23 MPH+.
