Subject: Brand new...what do I need?
Hello all--

I'm planning to run my first triathlon in October (a sprint with the swim portion in a pool).  What exactly will I need?  I'm a girl with pretty long hair, but tying it back works OK when I'm training in the pool..should I wear a swim cap?  Should I wear socks for the bike portion?  Should I definitely get bike shoes or is it OK to wear my running shoes for the bike portion since it's short (10 miles)?  Time is not really a concern...I just want to finish!  Lots of questions...thanks for your help!

You'll probably be given a swim cap--races usually give each wave a separate color. although it might be a bit different with a pool swim.  See if you can get in touch with the race director and ask.

Socks or no socks is mostly personal preference.  Without is faster in transition since you don't have to put them on, but some people aren't comfortable without socks.  I usually skip the socks on the bike (I've only done open water swims, and don't want to put socks on over sandy feet) but always wear them to run (some people don't--again, faster).  Just be sure to try sockless in training to see if you're comfortable.

You certainly can use running shoes & platform pedals with or without toe clips, and that might be your best bet for your first race.  Once people get into the sport, clipless pedals and cycling shoes are usually one of the first equipment upgrades.  It really does make you a lot more efficient.  But again, make sure you train with them before you try to race with them.

Take a look around the site, there's a lot of info already posted.  There's a really good thread recently started in the Triathlon Talk forum with FAQs that will probably take you to the answers to most of your questions.  But keep asking--people here love to help.

Good luck on the race. Just do some research and find some ideas for must haves and some personal preferences. Look for the necessities in each discipline. Have fun!

I like that 'Smile on face' is required. My first (and so far only) Tri as a spectator was a few weeks ago and I was amazed at the smiles I saw on most of the athletes faces. It was their smiles that gave me inspiration that someday I too could compete.  Good stuff.

did my first one in May, had picked up a tri suit but wasn't required..  Used my running shoes for the ride/run, just now today picked up cycling shoes (4 tri's under my belt, addiction confirmed). My wife did her first one in a normal swim suit, she did use a cap for her hair and had goggles. Used her mtn bike and only had her running shoes, no bike shoes..

The only thing you need is determination, and a smile doesn't hurt!

Good luck and enjoy!
