I've just found out that I'm pregnant (only 4 weeks so very early days).  I'm supposed to be competing in a team relay this weekend.  There are 4 people in the team, so each one swims, then each one does the bike, then each one runs.  The distances are only sprint a you get at least an hour between each of your sections, so I figure that as long as I don't "race" it (i.e. keep my HR under control, not get hot etc) I should be ok.

I'm a bit more concerned about the swim though - is open water swimming ok?  They do water quality testing there (it's in a rowing lake, so no currents or anything), but I do remember quite a lot of duck poo last year and it can get quite rough!  Any thoughts?

I wouldn't worry about it as long as the water quality was okay.  Swimming is a low impact sport and is suggested all through your prengnancy.

Happy & healthy 9 months to ya!

Did you ask your doctor, or are you just going by the opinions of unqualified strangers on an internet forum?

Congratulations, and best of luck!

x1,000,000,000.

There's not a single anecdote or story from someone else and what they did during their pregnancy that should take the place of your OB's advice.

My wife, for instance, had some cardiac issues in her first trimester--just stuff related to a normal pregnancy, and OWS would've been a horrifically stupid thing to do.

So the answer is maybe it's safe, maybe not--it's a discussion to have with your doctor. Besides, in a few weeks you won't feel like swimming anyway...

Listen to your OB. Please.

First and foremost see your OB.

The only thing I would be really be worried about, outside of any odd medical conditions you may have, would be getting a swift kick in the gut while swimming.

By the way, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with the above about speaking to your OB first as each person is different.

I have friends that "competeted" (more like swam in competitions but did not race) in an open water swim sea swim, 1 or 2km, every second weekend through their entire pregancy.  I plan on doing the same this summer.

My main concern is that I won't fit into my wetsuit.....

I have also just finished reading James Clapp's book "Exercising through your pregnacy".  I know it is only one point of view but it made for some very interesting reading.
