Subject: How long does it take you to warm up?
Search function seems to return no matches for this one. So today I went to swim for the first time in two weeks. For my first 1k I had to stop every 400 or so cause i was so out of breath and I was at a slow pace of 2:13/100yrds roughly. After The first 1k I took a 2 min break or so and came back and swam a bit faster only stopped after 500, I followed this by doin nearly another 1k straight which i felt strong and went sub 2mins which is more normal. Is it possible to take 25-30 mins to warm up? It normally takes me longer to warm up in the swim usually at least 5-600 yrds but 1k-1500 is a really long time it seems. could i be this rusty after a little under 2 weeks off from swimming?

When I am swimming regularly, I am good after 200 yards...However, like you, if I take too much time off, I have a hard time getting comfortable...I may go a whole session and never get into a good rhythm. I have stopped swimming for 3 months as I am training for a 140 mile bike ride Oct. 10...I am dreading getting back in the pool the first week or so.

I'm generally good to go after 4x100m.  From what I've read and experienced, lots of things can lead to longer warm-up times.  Fatigue from prior workouts is high on that list.

I will do 2 or 3x100 and be ready to go for the straight set of 1000 to 2000 yds. On the other I have been in OWS situations (race or practices) where there was not an option for a real warm up. To prepare for those situations I have taken to getting in the pool and going right into 1000 yard set. I have to start out real slow (I'm slow anyway!) and pick up speed as I work into the set. These pool sessions have been invaluable in helping to get into the lake for an OWS and just swim.

I really don't need much of a warmup. Many of the races I've done don't provide an opportunity to warmup for the swim so I approach my practices the same way. I'll start off with a hard effort and then dial it back. Of course my swim training is not convential either as I do everything in one continuous set. My intervals are done with an active recovery, not with a rest at the wall.

Food for thought!

depends on time during my training calendar, weather, workout type, etc.

swimming, when i am training full time, i do a longer warmup, with drills, around 800-1000.

running anywhere from 5-20 min.

cycling normally around 20-30 min.

A friend of mine has a coach that always teases me because I don't warm up enough! I'm usually good to go the moment I hit the water. But I do need to warm up and stretch before a run...
