The real USC, in the ghetto of LA
Subject: LA Bike Culture
Now that I live just a stones throw from Downtown LA I have learned a lot of things that surprised me (like I can walk down the street without getting robbed), one of them being that there is a HUGE bike culture.

There are groups that do “midnight” rides around LA, and they get up to 1000 riders, (pics below) they have been known to have their group be ¼ mile long, and CHOKE the little traffic there is at the late nights. They have actually had the police dispatch the chopper to fallow them. I was amazed, ill have to get off work early one day to ride with them.

Then there is the Fargo Street (first pic) challenge doing a time trial up a 33% climb, and a "who can do the climb the most times in the day." Ill have to make a trip to Fargo Street.....

that is so cool. i wonder how much of it is stemming from courier groups and/or critical mass.

the courier scene, and the tall bike/chopper-bike bike subculture amazes me. just found this: http://www.scallywagsbikeclub.com

huh.

actually it stems from a group called the "black label riders" (the funny double bike thing) in believe in NY (clearly it stems from the bike courier community). there is a documentory out called "B.I.K.E." But i found this culture through the downtown bike messenger crowd. (i was riding to work and got talking to a courier)

Tyrent,

That is amazing. You HAVE to go and ride with them one night, imagine how much fun you'd have and the really weird cool people you'd meet!

i think those rides probably stem from cm, but cm rides tend to be in the day time and the aim is to clog up a lot of traffic. midnight rides would just off the night owls, versus the chronic car commuters, who part of the cm thing is aimed at. the point is to be SEEN by lots of drivers to send a message that bikes belong.
