The front gates of the White House have been sealed off after the discovery of a suspicious package which Secret Service officials said was thrown over a fence by an individual who is known to police.
The package was described as a small object, and a man has been taken into custody by police, according to reports.
Armed guards took up positions, and members of the media were ordered inside the building.
A bomb squad robot was dispatched to examine the package and determine if in fact it was a bomb.
The package was identified just after President George W. Bush left on a helicopter from the White House's South Lawn. The president is on his way to Wheeling, West Virginia.
The Secret Service has not issued a statement.
