So my mom said to me over the weekend that she wants to hike from the North Rim down the canyon and up the South side. This has always been a dream for her and she needs a good goal to get herself back in shape. We are thinking October for this trip, that would give her plenty of time to get herself ready. I am not really concerned about whether or not she can handle it, she can.

So who has done this trip? Any advice you can give me would b appreciated. I haven't really started my research yet. She is not really a tent camper so we could only do it if we can get reservations at Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the Canyon. We stayed down there once before about 20 years ago only doing the South side.

So what say you CoJ. Thanks in advance.

Check with Phantom Ranch asap, I think the reservations are usually sold out the day they are available. I'm not sure how many months in advance they make them available. They have two options I beleive, a cabin and gender specific dorm rooms that sleep about a dozen.

Have fun, it's beautiful.

I just want to know who has to go back and get the car after you get to the south rim.

I've only done a day hike on the south rim going down the Kaibab Trail Head to Skeleton point and back.  I was a lot fatter back then and had my two boys with me.  lol

The R2R2R does have a lure to me.  Maybe some day.

Sounds like an awesome time, so good luck to her.

did R2R2R in October, was awesome!  one thing to think about, other than what has already be stated, is which way up the south rim you will go.  Bright Angel trail is longer but not as steep whereas the south kaibob trail is shorter but steeper.

and there are bathrooms along the Bright Angel, which isn't a big deal for most, but for some it is!

I did Bright Angel down to to plateau point and back up.  It was quite a hike.  I'm not a hiker, but was just going into peak training for HIM.  It still took a lot out of me.  I'd call up Phantom Ranch ASAP too.  This would be a REALLY fun thing to do though!

I remember at least one bathroom stop on South Kaibab when I hiked it in 2004.

Bright Angel is an easier trail, just gotta watch out for the mule trains....
