I'm new to this site and the forums and have already learned a great deal. Thanks for putting them together. I run, bike and lift weights regularly and swim sporadically. I would like to start competing -- probably in sprint level tris -- and so need to begin following a training program that helps me mix all 4 exercises appropriately. It is important to me to keep the weight training as an element of my program. Could someone send me a program that includes all four and still has the day or two of total rest each week? Thanks!

Did you look at the 16 Week Sprint 2x Balanced Sprint Program on this site?

I’ll be starting this program in the near future.

Just work the weights in when you think it will be most beneficial to you.

Good luck,
Rob

I did. Thanks. I kind of like the idea of working in the weights when I think best; I better like the idea of science or exeperience being behind the decision.

There are several books out there too with training plans - my favorite - Training Plans for Multisport Athletes.  It has plans for every level of competition.

I am using the Sprint 2X program (and have successfully completed 2 sprints). I had my own lifting program going for a while but when I moved and switched jobs I had less time to devot to it. My new gym includes a free fitness consult/training session with enrollment. I sat down with a trainer and made up a program that I can do in 30 minutes. It has been working great. I usually do it on the days I swim since that is when I am at the gym.
While I still lived in Chicago - I would run to the gym get my weights in and then use the way home as a cool down.

I think that using one of the programs on the site and then building in your weightlifting however it works best for you is a great idea.

Does your 30 minute lifting program emphasize anything particular. Large muscle group lifts?

COgirl:

I use the training plans in this book too. I got a bunch of tri books at the library and found Gale Bernhardt's book to be what I was looking for. I bought that book as well as the revised edition of _Total Immersion_. I now have an extensive two book triathlon library ;-)
