Subject: Taper in the middle of plan
I started the 12 week Silver HR Spring plan in late May. I have a Race that I have loaded into my race log that is scheduled for July 14, 2007. This is halfway through the 12 week plan. I don't think the plan will taper me. At least my schedule for the next two weeks actually seem to be building weeks. What is a good taper plan for sprint tri race day? This will be my 3rd triathlon.

Any advice would be very helpful.

Thanks!

Your current 12 week plan, does it end with an 'A' sprint race?

Is the July 14th race that you have in the middle of the plan important?  Is it an 'A' race, or more less important like a B or C race?

Hmmm, I hadn't really assigned importance to my races. My next race isn't until September.

Thinking....

Yes. I would have to say that July is a B importance race. September's race is my A race.

You could do a mini-taper. Decrease your training volume for the 3 days or so before the race, doing short workouts that focus on form and intensity.

Marm's correct.  If this race is not the most important and you are still putting in more volume and intensity on the current plan leading to the other 'A' race, a 3 day mini-taper should do the trick.  Although for a 'B' even a 'C' race - since you aren't doing a full taper and have to pretty much get back on the training wagon the next week, don't leave it 'all out' on the course'...just put in a good 'training day' out there so you don't need an extended recovery...leave some gas in the tank.  You want to make sure you won't have problems getting right back into the regular plan volume the week after.

Thanks much for the advice. I hadn't even considered my race day effort. I was just going to do 110%. That would have been pretty rough the following day when I had to get back into my regular routine.

Thanks a lot!
