Hi! lately when i have been going for my usual ride i have noticed that there has been an unualy large amount of squeaking coming from the drive train (is that whats its called?). i dont seem to have any problems changing into any of the gears but could this squeaking be affecting performance. I also noticed that the chain is moving side to side relative to the shifter on the front cog, any ideas? somthing that a bit of wd40 can fix or somthing more sinister?

Hmmm I think I know exactly what that is! If your crank set moves a little from side to side, (like its loose) and makes noises, i.e. squeaks, grinds or generally not good sounding stuff it could be your bottom bracket. If you are handy with tools it is an easy fix. Just have to buy the tool for it. Bottom bracket tool runs about 5 to 8 bucks. And the bottom bracket itself, depending on the name will run you about 30-100 bucks. That should be something that you fix soon. If you don’t, that movement could cause some baring damage or damage your inner threads on the frame itself. And that is a costly fix! Hope that helps!  Jack.

not a problem! I use to ride so much that I broke 2 bottom brackets in one season, because i would buy the cheapy. i got a good one the last time and replaced it myself and have been good for 3 seasons now.  good luck!

I agree with the above, your bottom bracket needs to be replaced. This would be a good opportunity to upgrade your bottom bracket to something better than you presently have. An Ultegra bracket will serve you well and will remain problem free for many years, and it only cost 38.95 at Nashbar. It will be a little more in a bike shop, but they will install it for you for a slight fee and you needn't worry about it for years to come. And, if I can be so bold as to suggest...DO NOT USE WD40 as a lubricant on your bike; it is for loosening stiff or rusted nuts and bolts, it is not a lubricant! Get some Phil Woods bike oil or something similar from your lbs...your bike will love you for it.

thanks for your help i took my bike down to the bike shop today, turns out the bottom bracket wasnt broken just full of dirt, but $35AUD latter my bike is fully serviced and tightened up which it definently needed, i picked it up for $150 AUD as an ex rental a few weeks ago where it was undoutbly neglected. So hopefully it will be good for another 1000km before i need to replace parts

Isn't it nice when you don't need to spend an arm and a leg for a new part. Just like the old Speedy Muffler add where the service person told the customer: "no charge, it was just a little clamp!" Anyways, glad your bike is on the mend...
