Subject: new to triathlons--live in NJ
Hi..my name is Mike and I'm new to triathlons. I have yet to do one, but i'm planning to do a few sprint triathlons here in New Jersey (or in the surrounding areas) next summer. I've run 4 marathons in the past and many half marathons. I have not swam too much in the past--my form on the crawl is not great--but I like to be in the pool and I'm ready for the challenge and understand the differences between swimming and running. I love to bike as well.

Any suggestions on how to train? Anyone else on this forum live in the NJ area? Also, any advice on diet/nutrition? I eat pretty well, but I'd like to make sure I'm eating the right things. Fortunately, I live 5 minutes from my gym which has a pool...I have a treadmill at home and I live 5 minutes from a park that has a very good 1 mile (hilly) bike path.

I'd love to talk to people about their experiences with the sprint tri's..and again, if anyone is in the NJ/NY/PA area, I'd love to hear of some good triathlons or want to see if someone wants to train with me.

Thanks!
Mike

Welcome to BT!  You can find some training plans on the homepage and post your nutrition questions as they come up.

Philly has that new tri for next year, but I heard it was really expensive - like $125 for an olympic distance tri.  There are several people here from your area - and you can search in the user listing by state.

Good luck!

Hi Mike. Whereabouts in NJ? What distance are you thinking of doing for your first tri?

Re your nutrition query, the answer to that will ultimately depend on your current fitness and goals going forward. I find that, like preference in running shoes, it's a very individual thang. A lot has been said re the benefits of improved body composition (increased lean muscle) in relation to race performance. (I'm sure you have a bit of experience in this since you're a marathoner.) I personally like to keep it simple - balanced diet of complex carbs, lil bit of fat, lean protein, and the occasional slice or three of cheesecake. During the season, I find myself fueling up on whole wheat toast with peanut butter a lot. That's practically a training staple, as well as Clif bars, Carb Boom, and Cytomax.

Mike, you might wanna hook up with Paramount Adventure. It's a triathlon/adventure racing club in your neck o' the woods. Check out this link:

http://eteamz.active.com/paramountadventure/index.cfm?

They have a bunch of group workouts and whatnot planned. Though most of the members concentrate on the longer distances (1/2 and IM's), I think you can benefit from the group training...not to mention, the club discounts.
