Glueless patches?

Master  1890     Cypress, CA |  Subject: Glueless patches?I did a ride on Thursday, first flat in a long time, and wound up (long story, probably funny if it wasn't happening to me) trying two different kinds of glueless patches (Park & Scabs). Neither held any air at all. I'm curious if anyone has had any success at all using these things, or if they're just total cr*p? |

Master 2407 Bellevue, WA | Subject: RE: Glueless patches? I have to agree. Everytime I've tried the Park "super patch", the tire flats again either that ride or the next. I thought it was just me, but I guess it's not. The MBTR reviews generally pronounce them the Park product worthless. I read that and some other reviews for Skabs, and some people say the trick is to scuff up the tube properly. I know I haven't done much of that, so perhaps that's what I've been doing wrong. |

I DID make sure to scratch up the spot really well before sticking on the patch. And then I let that sit for a few minutes before I inflated the tube again. The brand was Park, got it at Performance. |

Here’s the technique I use, FWIW: Find and mark the spot (and remove the offending object from the tire). Make sure the tube is inflated to the point that it’s roughly the size it will be in the tire. Wipe the spot down with the cleanest, driest thing you can find. After a long ride this can be tough. Lightly abrade the surface with the small sandpaper square. Apply the patch and really press it on. Re-install the tube, re-inflate, and put your bike back together. It takes me longer to describe it than to actually do it. I was a mechanic in a LBS thirty years ago and have plenty of experience with the “old school” method – and based on my experience I like the glue-less at least as well.After a tube’s been patched once I generally won’t patch it again on the road for use on the road. Maybe at home for use on the trainer or something. Or to use as a second backup on a long ride. Sorry if all this seems annoyingly obvious, but I have been surprised at the number of folks on fairly nice bikes I’ve ridden with that that have never been shown how to fix a flat. On a rear flat don’t forget to shift to the smallest gear before you start. And if you carry a pair of latex “exam gloves” shoved in your bag you can avoid getting your hands dirty and/or greasy altogether. -mike Edited by espressofish 2007-11-26 10:55 AM |
