Subject: Another car recommendation thread....NO SUVs please!

So, I drive a 12 year old Celica with 230,000 miles on it.  My husband is kind of forcing me to start shopping for a new car.  (I LOVE THIS CAR and DO NOT want to part with it, but, he may be right...)

ANYWHO, I generally choose cars based on cute-ness and non-American-ness.  I love small, low to the ground, 2-door, efficient little things.  I am looking at BMWs (and have his blessing and luckily the budget to do so) but was wondering IF there is a car out there that fits the bill that can transport a bike.  In the Celica, I have to put down the back seats and take off the front tire, but I can carry my bike in it.  Is there anything out there that is cute and tri-friendly?

If anyone knows, it's you folks....

Not sure if you like Subarus, but check out the XV Crosstrek. Big enough to get your bike in back with the seats down when you need to secure it, but also has a roof rack, etc for more people.Sportier 2 door vehicles, you're probably looking in the right place with BMW, Audi, {euro whatever}

Things that come to mind first

Mini Cooper S (made by BMW and really a fun car)

Jeep (what I have and LOVE but not a car)...You should test drive one, they are really nice now and fun.

Prius...I had one awhile back for work and actually really liked it (if you knew me you would know it is not how I normally roll).

My mom has a Prius and we fit a bike in by folding down the seats once. No need to take off the front tire. They are actually quite roomy. They drive a little weird so definitely test one out first. Obviously the gas mileage is amazing.

It is actually smaller - an offshoot of the older Impreza hatchback. It isn't tall like an SUV... but yeah, still 4 door.

The Honda Fit.  I have a friend with one, and he mounted a board with a mounting bracket for the front fork.  He takes off the front wheel and mounts it upright.  The Fit was listed in Triathlete Magazine about two years ago as one of the best cars for a triathlete.

It looks something like this:

I do not think that word means what you think it means.

So any hatch looks like an SUV to you?

Sorry hatch as in the full door bach hatch, not like a coup hatch. So you do not want any car with a back door hatch? The Mini has one but it does fill most of the things you are looking for.

the priority is cute-ness - if it has a hatch and is cute, i'm ok.  the mini, however, is not really cute...

I love my Honda Fit (it is 4 door but I think comes in 2 door) - put the back seats down and bike fits in perfectly! That was a HUGE factor in the last new car - no taking tire off and bike fits inside

Whatever you do, don't buy a Volvo.  Yeah yeah yeah, safe, blah blah blah.  The repairs will suck you dry. "Oh it'll last you 300,000 miles"  whatev.  Every time I take that sucker to the shop it's $500.

We're in so deep now though as it's been paid since we got it and I never drive it so makes no sense to ditch it.

Husband's Honda Accord on the other hand...........negligible on repairs, still going strong at 130,000 miles and 10 years old.

If you plan on keeping this car for 200,000+ miles, I would not get a hybrid.

The cute-ness is all depending upon the person.  I would prefer the look of the mini over most BMW's and that is really where you seem to be leaning.  I agree that a wagon doesn't fit what you are asking for, but I am also not a new car fan, so I won't be much help there.

The few people that I know that own Volvo's say they will never own another because of the super high costs of repair and it seems to be very often.

Why not a 2013 Celica if you like the one you have?

i think they stopped making celicas in 2004 Tongue out

i am probably going to buy slightly used, but i DO work for a tier 1 automotive supplier so if my discount makes brand new attractive i can go that way too

agree!  I would add the Jetta TDI Sportwagen.  I bought one about a year ago and I love it! No problem laying the bike down in back and it has rails so I bike mount can be easily mounted if you want to carry multiple bikes.

I guess the reviews for the 2013 Toyota Celica GT were what I had seen and they must not be available here, or the project never came to be.

Huh?  This car is an SUV?

I think Big Appa's right.  That word doesn't seem to mean what you think it does.

Just out of curiousity, what do you mean that "wagons are just as bas as SUV's"?  Is it the dorkiness, perception that SUV's are ruining the planet, driving experience, handling, or something else?
