I ride on a trainer but would love to have rollers too. Don't know how helpful that was!

a guy at the bike shop yesterday informed me that rollers most emulate outside conditions, however i've also heard great things about trainers too.

yes, because you have to use the same muscles as outside to remain upright on the rollers. I hear it takes a bit of practice to get used to it. Some day....

I had a roller and eventually switched to a trainer. The roller definitely takes some practice just to stay on the thing. Not bad once you get the hang of it though. Also, my roller didn't have any resistance device, so I found it was better for spinning and balance technique. Now have a cycleops fluid trainer and couldn't be happier. I can set it up anywhere(preferably in front of a TV). It also provides a good quality resistance. After having used them both, I would recommend a resistance trainer ( beware, the wind ones are less expensive but fairly LOUD).

I ride the rollers just for technique. I don't consider it fitness training. Usually if I get a little sloppy on the road, I'll go to the rollers until I get good at it again, then I go back to my normal training. Riding the rollers a little helps a lot. For hard interval training the trainer is probably better.

I had a trainer and never liked it so I threw it out. I've never tried a roller, so I can't compare; I would assume that it is like riding on ice which I don't particularly care for. Right now because there is too much snow and ice ice out there, not to mention the cold, I ride a Lifecycle at the gym; it does the job. My preference is to ride my road bike! :-O
