I raced in a cat 3,4,5 bike race this weekend. It was in Eugene, Washington. It was 42 miles - two laps around a mostly flat (with one hilly section) 21 mile course. I got a flat right before the first climb, and had to time trial it back to the pack. I caught back up, but was pretty spent for the second lap, and had very little left in me for the sprint at the end.
Overall it was a good race. I learned a lot - it was a really valuable experience catching back up to the pack after getting a flat (and the solo time trial I did was great triathlon experience!)

Sorry your race didn't go as planned but at least you learned something from it.

Wow, pretty good catching back up to the pack after a flat, I would have been out. Do you have to be in a cycling group or do you just sign up and race. I too know nothing about competitive cycling and always hear about Cat riders and such and wonder. Is it some sort of national ranking? Sounds like fun... great race.

Beginners are Cat 5. Top national amatures are Cat 1. To begin racing you must pay/sign up for a license, and then you progress up the cats by placing in races. Great job catching back up to the pack btw.

Congratulations for your fine outlook on such a bad start. I am impressed that you kept your wits and your focus about you which enabled you to catch up to the peloton.
