What are your thoughts on training w/ flippers in the beginning, and then stop using them maybe 4-5 weeks before the 1/2 IM?

Thanks

For me fins have been a great tool to help learn new skills, and to get rid of bad bits in my stroke. I would not spend too much time with them on, though, so that you come to rely on them. I use them because I have a lousy kick, and tend to sink when doing stroke drills at first. Mine have a built-in indicator for when I should stop using them, they wear the skin off the tops of my big toes. When my toes start to bleed, I quit with the fins, this usually happens after about 300-500 yards.

By all means, use fins!!!
Especially if you are working on drills or paying attention to your technique.

The best fins are Hydrofinz or Zoomers (any of the shorter types will work also).

Good luck!

My Master's coach works in a fin drill into almost every workout.

Fins are the only swim tool I use- let you keep up (or at least not actively disrupt others) in the lap lanes while you do drills.

Certain TI drills are very diff for beginners to do without fins initially. They tend to stabilize you and make balance easier.

I train with a pair of the Zoomers and love 'em. When warming up I usually do 200m with them as a kick drill with the kickboard and do a 2 x 50 of the same drill to cool down.

I also like to do the same distances for my warm ups and cool downs, but do a pull drill with a pair of the TYR Catalyst pull paddles and a pull buoy.

Before and after these drills I'll do a regular swim. You can really feel the difference and I've found it to really help my technique and speed.

Good luck!
