I wish I had a family doctor to ask this of but mine has moved out of the city, the clinic that she works at (that prescribed the antibiotics) is closed for 2 weeks and suddenly I'm thinking that I will be on day 11 of 14 days of treatment when I do my HIM. I'm feeling considerably better (infected road rash issue) and the pills aren't affecting my stomach so I'm not anticipating any issues on race day, but, does anyone have any knowledge as to what I might need to keep an eye out for?

What sort of Antibiotics are you taking?

There is a whole class of Antibiotics that have "Tendon Rupture" as a known Side Effect. Might be something to have a chat with your doctor about.

Lather up on the sunscreen -- anti-biotics may make you more susceptible to the sun.

I don't have a doctor right now - that's the problem. I'm on Novo-Lexin 500 mg.

Tendon Rupture is not pretty sounding.

Check the warning labels on the packaging and maybe chat with the Pharmacy where you got the prescription filled. Also do a bit of reseach to make sure that you know what the side effects are for Keflex. Here is a link to the the FDA warning about Tendon Rupture as a side effect to some (Not necessarily yours) antibiotics.

Just my non-medical .02 cents

I was recently on a 16-day antibiotic regimen (different antibiotic than you, and a fairly high dosage). It was the first time in my life I was ever on an antibiotic, so it was all new to me. The biggest effect it had on me was stomach issues and irregularity...which would not be cool on race morning (sorry if TMI). Also, one thing antibiotics does is strip your stomach of the natural bacterias. Therefore, you are not absorbing the nutrients and stuff you need from the food you eat. I was pretty tired during the entire time I was on the antiobiotics.

You might want to talk to your pharmacist about taking a probiotic while on the antibiotic. I've gotten several different opinions about taking it while on the antiobiotic and I am not sure what the determining factor is in taking it or not. Consensus definitely seems to be that it should be taken at the very least once you complete your course of antiobiotic. The probiotic will help restore those natural bacterias in your stomach.

I could not wait to get off of them. I hope they don't affect you too much. I couldn't imagine doing a HIM on day 11 of my antiobiotic, but then again, I was only 2 weeks post Ironman and the infection that resulted in the need for antibiotics had caused four days of little sleeping and hardly any eating, so I was in a bad place to begin with. Haha. I probably would have felt better had I been more healthy to begin with.

Good luck. I know people who have done IM whilst on antibiotic and have been fine. If you stick to your diet, etc., I think you'll be OK. Just respect that there might be some changes in your body.

Thanks Lauren, I was in the same bad place as I started the pills but I feel so much better now I'm pretty positive for Sunday. I have started in on active culture yogurt and have determined that my meds aren't indicated in the rupture problem (that just sounds so horrible).

I hope you are back on the mend yourself and congradulations on the IM. Having just done one half so far I have ever more respect for that distance.

Good! Glad to hear you're feeling fine. I know of a few people who did IMLP wihle on antibiotics and they seemed to be fine.

The yogurt will definitely help. I don't like yogurt. I wish I did because it looks so delicious and is healthy, but...YUCK!
