Subject: Swimming stroke HELP!!!

I was trying to find the correct forum to post this, but I just guessed and hope someone would read this and give me some pointers!

I am new to a masters swim team close to home. I am swimming 3 to 5 days a week for at least an hour. I was able to decrease my time on my 50's, 100's and 500's. However I feel like a ton of bricks. I am in the slowest lane and always have people passing me. My coach tells me it will come with time but something is not right. If I swim breast or back  I can keep pace with some others. When I kick I am pretty fast and could be considered on pace. My freestyle is horrible it takes approx 55 to complete a 50. What should I be looking for??? Please help, I feel helpless and ready to give upCry

Swim has been the slowest to improve for me as well...

I used to be that same way...I've improved a bit.... but you just keep at it, you'll learn to go the distance, maybe a little slow at first, but it will get better.. form form form.... you only swim as fast as you can swim while keeping good form....

I think many of us have experienced the same frustration - Don't give up. You will likely hear many different suggestions on how to improve. I decided to look for the help of an expert and enrolled in a weekend workshop that did wonders for helping remind me of how to swim with far less effort. I took a course offered by a coach in the local area www.liquidlifestyles.com, but would also recommend a Total Immersion course if you have one near you. Lastly, you could always try a private coach for some one-on-one time. I feel a lot more comfortable in the water and my confidence has improved as a result. See if you can find some local help and best of luck!

 One stroke at a time!

I may be stating the obvious or something you are already trying, but what helped me the most was figuring out my breathing and how many stokes to take between each breath.

And for what it's worth, I don't know how long you have been training or swimming, but 55 sec. for 50m ain't too shabby.  When I first switched from sidestroke to freestyle I was clocking on around 2:45 per 100m.

Currently I'm averaging 1:50 per 100 meters.  Your 55 per 50m would be about the same.

I am not a fan of doing a lot of different drills and all strokes on almost every workout. With the little information you have given and no details on your logs I can only suggest to focus on form. Do nothing but freestyle all the time and focus on proper kicking, pulling and breathing. Even if it means to slow down your current times, it is OK. Most people, including myself, throw the form out the window as soon as we satr getting tired. Endurance take care of that.

Good luck and don't give up

A) Your times aren't that bad, assuming that you are maintaining that pace thoughout the workout

B) Get a coach

C) Relax your shoulders, and if you are really focused on triathlon, quit kicking and start pulling

The drills that helped this fat, slow swimmer were finger tip drags and thumb rub. Both encourage torso rotation and minimize windmilling.

Why not go to finisinc.com and get freestyle paddles, blue zoomers and a snorkel to work on your stroke.  What better way to train than with constant feedback of how your doing and the ability to work on your stroke constantly without interruption.  The masters swim class might not agree but it's about results.
