Subject: Tour de Trainer
You've heard of the Tour de France, well I've decided to do the Tour de Trainer this fall/winter/spring (let's be realistic, I'm not Lance)! How did I come to this decision? Let me explain...

I started riding 4 years ago, this is my second year on a road bike (upgraded from a hybrid). I took up riding after running became boring (the same routes after so many years…) I started running when I was losing weight (73 ½ pounds to be exact), and riding allowed me to keep the weight off and explore some new and interesting roads. I started participating in triathlons 3 years ago and absolutely love the challenge they present.

This year my husband bought me a Computrainer (I know, I know, I’m very lucky)! Needless to say, since I acquired my trainer in late Spring, it didn’t really see much use as the weather was getting better. I live in New Jersey and am a VERY fair weather rider (don’t like to ride below 60 degrees). My coach had me down for a 2 hour ride on Friday. When I got up on Friday it was in the low 50’s. No WAY was I riding outside! As I began to contemplate my options, I thought about my trainer, but 2 hours? I realized I needed something to inspire me to train for (other than next year’s triathlons). I had an epiphany (here is where you come in).

I had downloaded the Tour de France (TdF) for my Computrainer. While I’m eating my breakfast I decide that this would be an AWESOME challenge for the winter! I’m going to ride the TdF on my trainer. Yup, the whole way. Hmmm, what’s to stop me from just taking a day off or holding back? Ah ha! I should blog about my progress (haven’t blogged before either, but hey, why not?). If I started on October 3rd (last Friday) and average 100 miles a week (got to LOVE the fact that you can start courses at a specified location), I should be able to complete the Tour by Spring (it’s 7 whole months until April 1st) when I’m finally willing to go back outside. Anyone interested in joining me on my trip to Paris?

That's a great way to endure indoor training!  I don't have a Computrainer, so I can't join in on the fun, but you will head into spring in top shape, I am sure!

Good luck and see if you can get the other jerseys throughout the tour!

Have fun with the tour.  I teach a spin class and and I design my July classes around the tour, trying to replicate the flats, hill intensity etc.  You should have a blast with it. I'll be checking your blog.

Allez, allez!

Enjoy your CT... and you TdF Challenge. I do similar crazy adventures and quests on my CT also. I live up in Eastern Canada, so I spend LOTS of time on the CT!

One thing however: if you download TdF stages, be careful not to overheat your CT load generator in the steep inclines. Racermate even pulled out the Alpe d'Huez awhile ago because of that.

You need to keep at LEAST 60 rpm even up the steepest inclines.

The problem is not always with steep grades (it can handle it for short bursts) but for the long steady inclines at high grades.

I tried to do Hautacam climb a few weeks ago and stopped midway through. I could "smell" the CT was not enjoying it!

Thank you VERY much for that update. My TdT is on hold this week as bike is in the shop As my chain kept skipping (lost a tooth on my middle ring) and had a couple of bent teeth (probably from my fall in August). Will have it back tomorrow but I have to pack to fly to Austin for the LiveStrong ride this Sunday.

What a cool idea!! Hmmm..maybe I should ask for a Computrainer for Christmas. Would make the drainer more appealing!
