I live in Southeast Texas and am looking forward to my first triathlon. I grew up dancing and then had three kids in three years. I started running to get off my baby weight and quickly became addicted, although not wonderfully good, I enjoy running.  I have done several 5k's and train for half-marathon.  I have always enjoyed spinning and recently added biking into my addiction.  My husband wanted me to try a tri and I have started swimming.  We are going to do our first tri in August and I am really excited.  I am not a competitor but rather just enjoy staying in shape and burning calories while having some fun!

I have enjoyed reading all the tips and infor on the site!

Welcome to this great sport...I am rather new myself but have been bitten by the bug and am now sufficiently addicted having done a half dozen this year. I will be down your neck of the woods this Fall for the Austin HIM.

I am not sure of your swimming skills, but I personally have found that proper coaching is very helpful, as technique, specifically; efficient technique can make a big difference for y.ur bike and run (not spend a lot of energy inefficiently).

I love reading that so many people are out trying this for the exercise or just for personal goals.  I was concerned that it would be a bit embarrassing trying to finish an event while everyone else was running 6 min miles and biking 25 mph.  lol

Good for you, your health, and don't forget about what a great example you are setting for your children.

I am also doing my first sprint in August, i was always under impression of Triathletes were crazy athletes and in unbeleivable shape then i signed up for one and threw that motto out the window, sorry !!
I love this site as you can ask anything and get good honest answers from experienced people that will encourage you all the way to the finish line.

Hi Jessica,

I can relate to you also.  My first tri is August 16 in Novi MI.  My sport was swimming for 8 years and in high school, but after two kids in two years, a bachelors and masters degree, and a full-time teaching job, the exercise thing gets a bit lost.  I have been training since April and must say my LEAST favorite sport is the running.  But I am happy to say I completed my first 5k last week.  Although I finished 134th out of 138, I still feel like I accomplished something and cannot wait until the next 5K I do at the end of the month.  Well, good luck with your training and I wish you well.  You will have to let us all know how it goes!!

We do have a lot in common because I had three kids in three years, just went back to teaching this past year after staying home for six years, and added my masters on top of that!

Thanks-I will let you know how it goes!

I appreciate all the positive comments. To what Michael said-yes-I love showing my daughters the importance of health/nutrition by example!

Welcome to BT.  I am in the Dallas area but used to live in Beaumont.  If you can run a 5k, you can do a sprint tri!  Keep up the good work!  Visit the TX forum sometime, everyone there is very nice and helpful!

I grew up outside Dallas! I think you have the better end of the deal...Beaumont is not so much fun!
