something ih ave not had to worry about till now,

how do you know when cycling shoes need to be replaced, and what happens as they break down?

the reason i am asking, is my right leg feels/looks like its now is a slightly diff position than my left (enough that i can see the diff). cleats have not moved AT ALL, same place on the shoes, etc.

as they get older, do the bottoms flex more, bend out of shape, etc? time to replace?

should i be looking to other possible causes?

FWIW they are sidi T2s (or 1s, not sure), 3 seasons of use as my only bike shoes.

It's probably not the shoes, it's probably the cleats.  The cleats tend to wear down with use.  Of course, they might just have shifted from the screws loosening up, so that would be the first thing I would check.  But if you have any problems clipping in or out, they are probably just worn.

Do you replace the cleats about every year or so? I get about 4500 miles on a pair of cleats.

I wore out my pedal so I suggest looking carefully there.

I'm guessing you ride a lot. How many miles in the 3 seasons?

I have carbon soled shoes that are 3-4 years old and think they are due to be replaced considering my options. I think they have been wet to many times and in the dishwasher to clean them.

cleats are two weeks old, pedals are about 3 months old,

same issue after replacing both, so thats not it.

could also be hips out of whack/healed weird from a hip injury?

shoes prob need replaced badly though.

My only pair of bike shoes are over 5 years old now.  Thousands of miles on them.  They seem pretty hard to "wear out".

I think you've answered your question here.  I also have slightly "off" feet, from an old ACL tear, that causes some asymmetry.  Don't place the cleats based on their position on the shoe.  Place them based on where your foot's natural position would have them on the pedal.
