Subject: This is normal....right?

It's Wednesday and my Half IM is Sunday, so I'm at the end of the taper....and absolutely exhausted!

I'm trying to remember how I felt last year right before my IM, but I guess it's like childbirth, you eventually forget the pain and only remember the wonderful finish.

So, help me out here, should I be feeling this way?   Thanks!

I've done one HIM but if I had any advice it would be to sleep as much as possible between now and Sunday. I felt pretty tired in the taper weeks if not a bit sluggish but I got as much sleep as possible and ate well

Sorry to hear that.  If you mean you feel washed-out, tired, drained, and have a general lack of energy than I think I can relate as I feel exhausted like that when I've overtrained.  In contrast, my typical taper several days before the race (when I don't overtrain) feels like my legs are recovering and I am more-or-less "pent-up" with energy.

X2 on the sleep.  Also make sure your nutrition is good.

I've only tapered for an HIM once and it really screwed with me. I was exhausted but had insomnia, I felt achey and irratable. My coach quickly added some small bursts of intensity into my reduced volume and it helped tremendously. For me it wasn't from overtraining or being tired from training, it was the physical change I went through with the reduced activity. I felt great on race day though so hang in there!

I agree with Lazymarathoner. Whenever I taper I always get a strange mix of wayyy too much energy that turns into restlessness (not unusual) combined with feeling really sluggish and somtimes 'exhausted.' I'm not an expert in exercise phys but it probably has something to do with the sudden lack of endorphines as well as just changing your level of exercise so dramatically. I know many people (including myself) who actually have more energy when they are exercising more hours than less.

Try and harness all of that excess energy and exhaustion into mental preparation and rest. And I really think once race day hits, no matter what (as long as you don't decide to suddenly disregard the taper), you will feel fine!

Have fun!

Totally normal.  All last week (I raced RI 70.3 on Sunday) I felt like a slug. I was tired and slow feeling ... but also anxious and climving the walls.  Keep up the rest and good luck on Sunday !

Thanks for the replys everyone.

I agree with cam244, I actually have more energy when I'm doing more. I biked to the lake (Michigan) and did an OWS  yesterday and felt great afterward.  This morning I'm tired, I slept in today and may take a nap later (hmmmm....naps...) My plan has me taking today off and then a light swim and run tomorrow.

I'm doing Spirit of Racine in Wisconsin.
