I am excited.  I did a 10k race today, but I had 16 miles scheduled for my Marathon program.  I ran 5 miles to the race site, did the race, and then ran home.  My race time was 46:28.  A PR by 3:40!

Anyone else do this to get in long runs but still have the energy and excitement of the race?

3:40 is A LOT to cut off of a 10K time ! congrats and way to work it into your long run.

I've done that before ... ran a couple miles to a 5K, raced it, and ran home.

way to go !

Wow, that's great. Maybe the 5 mile warm up did the trick. I really am in awe of all of you fast runners...and really anyone who can run more the 4 miles lol. But that is really cool. What a great way to work out...just throw a race right in the middle.

Congratulations! PRs are validation for every time you didn't want to get up before the sunrise (but did anyway). Its amazing how much a solid warm-up can improve the results of a race. Many people are terrified about the thought of running before a 5k, 10k, etc. In these shorter distances, it can help to make the race your second wind.

In the Army, we have a physical fitness test every 3-6 months: 2 minutes of push-ups/sit-ups and a 2 mile run. You wouldn't believe the stares I get from people when I run 1-2 miles before the timed portion, then run an 11:50 2 mile.

Good luck with the marathon!

Way to go Dude!  Kick butt (wouldn't let me use the 'donkey' version of the word), take names and inspire others.

My very 1st 10k I had to run a mile to get signed up, run a mile back to get to my truck to drop my wallet and crap off, and then I got my mtn bike out and did a full on sprint for a mile again to then run an additional 100-200 yards to the start.  I got to the back and the gun went off while I was sweating bullets.

I suck at running but did it in 1:14 on fairly flat and then I did my second 10k at the Peachtree Road Race at 1:12 and that was even with goof off time.
