I'm about to start training for a HIM, the Gulf Coast Tri in Panama City.  I have been training in an outdoor pool in my neighborhood, but since the race is in May 2010, this pool will be closed during most of my swim training.
Any ideas on indoor training facilites?  I live just north of Gardendale and my office is in Trussville.  Anywhere in between would be fine.  I know that there is a YMCA in Trussville, but I hate to pay for a monthly membership to swim 2-3 days a week.  I already have a weight room at home, so I wouldn't use a membership for anything else.
Also, is there anywhere that you can take an adult swim class?  I need to work on my form.

My only suggestion would be the YMCA in Trussville or the other YMCAs throughout the city. I'm at the YMCA in Greystone and use it mostly for the pool.

I guess I'm paying alot for a pool, but then again, I'm part of the Masters Program there and it has been nothing but FANTASTIC.

Unless you have access to UAB, that's the only other indoor pool that I know of in the city.

Glad to see others in BHM. One of these days, we'll have to get together for a ride!

I started with the Masters swim program at the mountain brook YMCA and it's been great.  you pay monthly, and it is good training.  Lot of folks that do triathlons from what i can tell.  You can join the swim program, and not "join" the Y.  I believe it's around $35/month, but it's outdoors, but i'm guessing heated (you would want to check).  There are M/W/F sessions starting at 5am/5:30am.

Other than that, UAB has a pretty nice indoor lap pool, but you have to be a member of UAB Rec Center from what i understand.  I don't know about other options, besides joining the Y.

good feedback.  I may check into UAB rec center.  I'm an alumni, so I may be able to get a membership.

And I am at the Y in Bessemer.  Very low usage over here, great place to swim.

I think we now have all the Ys in the city covered.

Like mentioned, if you just want masters, you can pay $30-$35/mo without having to actually join the Y. For the price and the group, you can't beat it!

I also live North of Gardendale.  I work in Hoover and use the Hoover rec Center.  I am not sure of there current rates but I know it is cheaper than the YMCA.  I would like to join the YMCA also but I really don't use much else in the gym but the pool.  If you are interested I will check to see what the current membership dues are.  I wish gardendale would build one at there Civic Center.  Where do you ride at?  The guys I ride with usually ride on that end of town due to the low volume of traffic.  We have several different loops in gardendale and the morris area.   All four of us did the Gulf Coast this year and are planning on doing it and the full iron next year.  Let me know if you are interested.
