Subject: Which is the best choice for my first full?
I am planning on atempting my first 140.6 late in 2010. I have looked over the course descriptions of the following races and they seem to be about the same. One exception would be Ironman Florida which seems to be difficult to reserve a spot. Which race would you suggest for a person just tring to complete the distance for the first time?

IDT at Plymouth Rock
ChesapeakMan
Great Floridian
Beach2Battleship
Ironman Florida

Another 140.6 late 2010?

Fixed that for ya.

There are many factors to consider when selecting a race.  Some courses are easier than others but any way you slice it, 140.6 miles is a long day.  There is another thread on the IM board that lists several factors to consider.

A couple of questions to consider:

1 - Ocean vs Lake vs River swims
2 - Ironman brand (more expensive, more hoopla) vs non-IM branded race

Personally, I chose a race that I could easily drive to and that had similar weather and terrain to where I live (I live in TX and will be doing FL).  I wanted a M-dot branded race for my first.

How did you go about registering for IM Florida. It is my understanding that online sign ups fill up very quickly and the best way to get registered is to do so in person the day after the event.

yup.

If you volunteer at Florida I THINK you can sign up for 2010 right after the athletes.... I believe online registration exists, but it fills up v. quickly (if it opens at all)

I did IMLP for my 1st full IM, but have signed up for Beach to Battleship as well this year. Lake Placid was beautiful and I would highly recommend it unless you have an adversion to hills. I had to go the Community Fund route to get in since registration never made it on-line.
The swim portion of Beach to Battleship sounds like a blast since it is a point to point, wetsuit swim in saltwater with the current. The bike and run course is relatively flat.

I can only speak to IMFL.  As long as you go on at noon the next day you should be fine.  The races used to sell out in minutes.  Now Ironman has put a policy in place that those registering onsite have to pay on the spot.  It used to be you could sign up and pay later.  This policy has made the sign up period last longer.  Granted, now you have hours instead of minutes but I would be online right at noon to make sure.  It is always possible that things could speed back up.
