Subject: route elevation
No matter how many marks I use to make a new route, my elevation is completely outrageous.  I'm pretty sure I didn't do 41,000 feet in climbing on my 30 mile ride the other day.  What gives?

Have you tried using the "reset elevation" button?

It has done the same thing to me, I reset and then remarked the ride and it was way off.

I have a question about the elevation feature- I never  get any elevation on routes I create, even after hitting the 'reset elev.' button. Is this a feature for paid members only?

thanks so much

It's a free feature, but the elevation data comes from a USGS data service. Some areas outside of the U.S. don't get elevation data. We had a backup service in case this happened but they apparently went offline recently. We'll see if there's another backup available.

Oh well...

If this feature becomes available again, great. If not, I am still very happy wih the ability to map rides/runs, calculate pace etc. And, with the new 'follow roads' feature on the route, it is so much greater. As always, THANKS SO MUCH for everything on BT

Yeah, it was off for me too.  The first time it was a 49.9% grade hill for over 3k' on a 3 mile run, logged off and logged back on, it was the same elevation change but only 19% grade, reset it as suggested and it calls it 361' total gain.  The entire time, the elevation profile was correct.

I was wondering how average grade was calculated, since none of my out and back runs have a 0% average grade either here or on google earth.  Mapmyrun doesn't output average grade just the grades of significant hill climbs.  For the route (posted below) I purposefully just took the (mostly) downhill portion of my run and mapped it expecting to see a negative average grade and gain.

Are the triangles on the elevation profile used to calculate slope, since they seem to have a net elevation change value (with respect to the start)?  How are the triangles placed?  By slope inflection?

Any thoughts?

We take the elevation above sea level for each point (lat/lon)  you click, or that is recorded. We then get the difference from the previous point and add/subtract that the total elevation.
