In tire changing circles, predominately filled with men (otherwise known as circle jerks), a bent derailer can be problematic - particularly if it's bent from the side or down (bent upward can often improve performance (I wonder which way welshy's derailer tends?) Bent derailers can cause self doubt and sometimes a slanted akward motion that can cause slippage and inturuption of tire motion....

Musing from the Great Pontificator....

The following text was borrowed from a long and forgotten post...

Does crank length have any effect on  performance?  Since it is something that can't be changed, should one try to improve by focusing on the stroke?  When considering all of the variations to the stroke that can be employed to improve performance and efficiency, what works best?  Is it as simple as technique and concentration?  Or, will slight adjustments to thrust, angle of attack and cadence yield results?  But, how far can one take this?  How much more improvement can be made before one need's to consider rate limiting factors such as maximum sustainable tempo and the length of ones crank?

By the way, how do they judge proper crank length?  Is it somehow related to shoe size?

It probably should have stayed "forgotten".  Glad to see you back, Mr. Tom.

So... I'm thinking you don't want to hear my story about how I broke my derailer...  it just snapped right in half...

Or, how, when I replaced it, I bought a bigger one.

Isn't that called receiving the Bobbit treatment! As far as the bent derailers causing a slanted akward motion, I always refer to that as a neat party trick.
