Subject: Lake Lanier Tri this coming weekend -- no wetsuit.

Should I be concerned?  I do not have a wetsuit and am going to be racing this weekend at the Lake Lanier Tri.  It's only a 400 yard swim and swimming is the one leg I can be in the FOP-MOP range, so I'll be out of the water in a little over 6 minutes probably (Although it will take me another 3 to get up that damn hill).  If I am going to be in trouble without a wetsuit -- what advice do you have?  I can't justify buying one at my size (5'7" 240lbs.).  I am planning on dropping a lot of weight this winter (although I had planned on dropping it this summer too)!  Tongue out

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I would not worry about it at all - if the swim is wetsuit legal it will only be just barely I would think. The water should still be well into the 70s. Plenty warm enough. Not like last year by a long shot! The water temp was fine, but the air temperature on the other hand...

But you are right - the run up the hill should warm you up, regardless.

The bolded part is the only thing that has me thinking twice about wardrobe. The water should be plenty warm enough, warmer than the air. I did this race a couple years ago and I think it was 55 degrees on race morning - the only race I've ever put on long sleeves for. I needed the sleeves on the bike but took them off on the run.

ETA: I also had my toe-warmers on my bike shoes. My feet were still chilly but the bike is so short it's almost tolerable.

I appreciate the input guys.  Looks like the forecast has warmed up a few degrees as well, so I think it should be fine.  If I am finding the info correct from the fishing reports, it looks like the water temp is around 76-78 degrees now, so I can't imagine it would drop too much in the next 5 days.  As long as we don't get some freezing rain I think I'll be okay.  Won't help me up the hill, but at least I won't be hypothermic!  Surprised

So question about the temp - should I consider wearing something with long sleeves for the bike portion?  Coming out of the water on a cold morning in a tri suit that holds water/sweat and doesn't have sleeves sounds like it will be incredibly cold during the bike.

Don't make the mistake to put on a long sleeve if that's your concern.  If you're going to put on sleeves, make them arm warmers so you're not stuck wearing a long sleeve top.

I did the race last year without a wetsuit and it was fine.  The water actually felt warm compared to the air.  As far as the bike I still went with my wet tri shirt and with the sun being out I warmed up very quickly so I would not recommend long sleeves.  If you have a way to warm your feet then do that.  My toes were cold and took about a half mile on the run to warm up.
