Subject: So what is a fair number

Just trying to get an idea.  I have put together a team for a 200 mile relay next year.  This is all of our first big (logistically speaking) undertaking in that the distance is so long, and it is over two days.  We are recruiting corporate sponsors to offset some of the costs.

Question is what is a fair number.  Sponsorship doesn't get you much other than your company name and website on the back of our shirt and perhaps a certificate of thanks suitable for framing.

Anyone ever done this kind of thing.  Thanks in advance for the input.

You'll do better if you can offer a website with blog with frequent updates that also promotes their companies/groups. Just being on a shirt for one team is not that big of an incentive compared with being on the shirts for every participant in the race.

As for what is a fair number ($) for a business - it depends on your market. You might get more money in one city vs. another. I think your best option is to offer several levels so you have a "size" for every budget. For $50 you get your logo in a 1"x2" size, for $100 you get a 2"x3", and for $200 you get ... you get the idea.

Again, I would offer more than just the logo on the shirt, though. I would offer to promote their business to an online audience.

Last, have you considered using this as a fundraising opportunity for a non-profit/charity? You can get sponsors for that more easily, if you are giving a substantial amount of the donations to the non-profit/charity and only putting a small amount towards expenses.

JSponsorship doesn't get you much other than your company name and website on the back of our shirt and perhaps a certificate of thanks suitable for framing.

This might be an issue for you. If YOU were a business owner and were approached with this kind of deal, would you pay to be a sponsor (and not even for charity or a good cause)?

What will be the potential reach or views of their logo? That would be the first question I'd ask as a potential sponsor. Also are you going to wear the shirts for 48+ hours straight? (eeww?)

I think there has to be MUCH more in it for them besides a little logo on a shirt not many people will see; just my opinion as the return on their investment seems slim to none as you pitched it.

When we did Ragnar last year we approached one of the local car dealerships about leasing us Vans.  If we put their LOGO on the side of the van they let us lease them for less than half the price.

How many runners are on your team? It may be that, if you can all afford it (and there are was to keep the cost fairly low--depending on which race it is and where you have to go for it), it's just easier to forgo the sponsors. Honestly, just getting the team organized is a big enough hassle...but for the participants, aside from the $ committment (which wan't that much, relatively speaking), it was simple. Having to deal with sponsors would add another layer of PITA to the whole affair and have driven me nutz.

Some companies are more willing to give merchandise than cash. You might want to come up with a list of items you need and think of stores that may provide them: clif bars, gatorade, regular food, athletic gear, etc, i don't even know what all.....

What do you mean a fair number?  If you a fair amount of money to "buy" a sponsorship, I'd say pretty much whatever they're willing to give.

Good suggestions by all.  Thanks for the input.

We have decided to adopt a charity.  Our team is currently deciding between the Wounded Warrior Project, Intrepid Fallen Hero's fund, and Fischer House.  Agreeing all funds over necessary expenses will be donated to the charity.  Every team member has deep military ties, and we all feel dumber for not having already thought of this.

Our team is currently 12 strong and we've had one of our members (also a business owner) jump in with both feet.  He also volunteers with some local triathlons and has access to steeply discounted items necessary for the race.

We've already got shuttle vehicles as well as recreation vehicle (2) base camps covered.  Also a group of our friends who are not so much into the whole running thing have volunteered as a support crew of drivers, and cooks.

The race is the www.texasindependencerelay.com and its one a lot of us have been talking about doing for a while.  Should be a lot of fun.
