Subject: Advice re: Space Shuttle launch viewing

For the 'been there, done that without any major injuries or arrests' crowd... advice on viewing the space shuttle launch scheduled for this Wednesday at 6pm-ish? Everything I possibly need to know. I read that it's best to get there at 6am????

p.s. I found the NASA page and others re where to position oneself, etc but I'm looking for the kind of advice that's more about how to endure the 12+ hours of waiting in/around a car. Are there porta-potties around (ick)?

Bring a cowbell, signs, a cooler, food, lawn chairs, and scream your head off for 12+ hours while ringing said cowbell and waving said signs.  When someone asks, “What the H_LL are you doing?” (and they will), just tell them are in ‘jockstrap training’ for an upcoming Ironman.

I'm pretty sure you can view it from most of the hotels along highway 1 in Titusville. I stayed at the Holiday Inn there once and I recall being able to see the launch pads across the water. Call them and ask. I imagine there is a wait list during a launch and the rooms probably go at a premium. Having your own potty and balcony would really be the way to go.

1. Wait until there's an evening/night launch.

2. Go to the Tampa Bay Brewing Company in Ybor City. http://www.tampabaybrewingcompany.com/

3. Get a table on the second-floor balcony.

4. Get drunk, eat good food.

5. Look to the east, see the launch.

6. Profit!

They've moved to a new location and no longer have a 2nd floor balcony. Nor do they face the east.

Otherwise, an excellent suggestion! Perhaps I will set my butt in a similar sitcheeation.

What kinda pass do you have? We always got there 5-6 hours before hand. There are porta-potties. I would bring some of those fold up lawn chairs, good book, and a cooler of food and drink, flash lights if it's at night. A am/fm radio would be nice too. And be prepared to sit in traffic for a few hours after the launch. I don't know the window they have but be ready to stick around for the entire window if they have problems. I've only been to pre-911 launch so there might be more security issues now.

And watch out for the helos with machine guns.

From the latest news from NASA - you might even have time for a few drinks with the astronauts!  Jokes aside - lucky you.  Hope they have a good launch and that there is no scrubs for the day.
