Subject: April Multisport Challenge!
Since this was sort of my idea to start out with, I will volunteer to administer this challenge.
My thoughts about the structure:
- You can set goals in swimming, biking and running, of course. If you are only planning on swimming and biking, or just running and biking, for instance, then just set goals in those sports. I'm not for "forcing" someone to do something they don't want to do.
- For someone to be at 100% for the month, they have to have met their goals in swimming, biking, and running (or whatever combination that they have chosen to compete in)
- In order to calculate a weighted average of how much of their goal somewhere has completed, there needs to be some sort of conversion factor for the 3 sports, since while most will be swimming in meters or yards, for biking and running, some will go by time, others by distance. For the March Multisport challenge, the conversion factor was 1 pt = 100 yards swimming=1 mile bike- 5 minutes of biking (which seems maybe a bit high to me)=1/4 mile running=3 minutes running, but that is certainly open for discussion.
- As far as teams, self-selected as usual. Maybe do teams on a regional basis, or perhaps, because the baseball season is about to begin (not that we really have time to watch baseball...) maybe choose teams based on the baseball divisions?

Feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

I'd be interested in this challenge- it sounds good!  It really helps me to stick with my training schedule!  I'm all about being on a team!

I'll volunteer to be Team Captain for the Crazy Canucks. Anyone else who would like to be a member of the Crazy Canucks please PM me.

For the March Multisport Challenge the metric equivalents were:
1 point = 100 meters (Swim) = 500 meters (Run) = 1500 meters (Bike)

The trend lately has been that goals can be set in distance or time, and the % complete is your score.

Eg:
100 mile goal: 75 miles actual = 75 % complete
100 minute goal: 80 min actual = 80 % complete (winner)

Using other standards of equating time and distance has different effects on people of different speeds. It's not totally fair.

If everyone set goals for each sport (time or distance), then calculated their % complete based on their goals in each sport, then calc total. Throw out anything over 100% for each sport.

Eg:
Goals:
100 minute swim
200 mile bike
300 minute run

Actual:
100 minute swim
189 mile bike
305 minute run

Percentages:
100% swim
94.5% bike
100% run (101.6% but ignore over 100%)

Total 294.5 / 300 = 98.16% for an individual total
(If someone omits a sport, score out of 200 instead of 300)

I support this, it is easier to deal with in Excel.

Would the dates be April 3 to April 30th or full April dates of 1st-30th?

For Injury & Illness, this unplanned stuff killed me and the team on the Feb run challenge. How about a double injury and/or Illness to a team member should not count against the teams total. Must be verified and logged. Look at my Feb log, all that red!

As for a single injury or illness. Stuff happens, plan accordingly!

I'm in the little March one...my only suggestion is tweak the point system. I swim and run slow and am stronger on the bike. Yet when working out in general I earn 20 points an hour for swimming and my slow runs and only 16 points while biking. I suggest we increase bike points by 25% for miles or time.

In March we allowed either time or miles to convert to points.

I'm going on an island hopping bike trip to Greece in April...lots of bike points...ah swimming in the Agean Sea...I'm going to have to convert those times to points. Can I have miles/yds while home and convert time to points while on vacation?

Why do we have to throw out anything over 100%? Can we instead cap out at 100%? For example, if I set a bike goal of 100 miles, but ride 130, my percentage would still only be 100% completion. People still are discouraged to sandbag, because you aren't getting MORE for exceeding your goal.

Come on Janelle - you, I and Mike 45 can join Team FL Force...

I'd be able to put up some really awesome bike #ers in April if I wasn't going to be in DC at a seminar most of one week... however, I have a century ride the day after I get back

let's go! Might have to change the team name to Team FL/GA Force

The Feb Run Challenge took anyone who wanted to join FL Force as there was no "Southeastern" Team. I'd be all for changing it to Team Southeast.

No arguments from me. That is better than the "Sweaty States Team"

Alright... So I'm in for the Canucks again... I'll go for 9h 20min running, 18h 45min biking, and 8hr 15min swimming... I've made my Feb. and March goals with relative ease, but this is defiantly going to be tough for me... I need to get in 95% of all planned training this month to meet it. GO CANUCKS!

Seriously, you guys hash out a southeastern region team name and I'll start a new thread with a new team name.

I personally don't like the points system, I used it before I found BT and as I got into better shape I kept changing the points structure then dumped it all together.

I'm all for % based system, please see the attached spreadsheet. This is what I will use for team tracking if points are NOT used.

    Notes about the spreadsheet:
    1) The "NaN" means not a number
    2) The Team cells on the upper right are conditional formatted and will turn green if 100% is reached by all.
    3) The individual totals are also conditional formatted green only when 100%.
    4) If someone just wants to do 2 out of the 3 disciplines it is not problem, no goal is inputted.
    5) It is setup for 20 participants but copy and paste each row is all that is needed to add more.

    Don
