Subject: Translating 25 yd training lanes to a 50 m lane

I just wanted to get some opinions on training.  My pool's lane is 25 yards long and my outdoor tri in June is in a pool with 50 m lanes.  I have been slowly increasing my swimming distance and right now can swim about 400 yards with wall turns.  I guess my questions are how will my 25 yard lane training translate to a 50 m lane?  What can I do to make myself more comfortable come race day (since I don't think I'll have a chance to get in a pool w/ a 50 m lane before my race)?  I know people train in pools for the winter for long OWS sometimes, so I imagine that it's not a big deal, but since I am new to this swimming thing, I am kind of nervous about the longer lanes.  My race is in June, so I have lots of time to build up and not freak out.  Thanks!

1.  It will take you about twice as long to swim the 50m.  You are eliminating one turn, so your 50m time in a 50m pool should be a bit less than 50m in a 25m pool (or 25y in your case).  Distance is distance, regardless of how long your swim lanes are, with the only difference being the number of times you have to turn around.

2. I don't see any reason that you would be uncomfortable on race day.  You'll still be in a pool.  You'll still be able to see the bottom.  You'll still have lane dividers.  It's just going to take longer to get from one end to the other.

You will be fine.  Best of luck.

Don't worry about race day, you're going to be great as long as you are putting the swim time in. A pool swim is a pool swim. Noone will be climbing over you or pulling your legs.

As far as time goes,  50 m is just under 10% longer than 50 yds. Your times will be approx 10% higher in the 50 M pool. Ex. 100 yds in 1:00 would be approx a 1:07 in a 50 m pool. (I added a second for a flip turn) The 7 sec/100 rule is used fairly regularly in the swimming world.

Have a blast in your swim, you'll do great!!!

don't go out too fast! 50m will be fine but conceptually feels longer than 2 x 25m (what we have here in england). can you practice in a 50m pool before the race just to get used to it?

Thanks for the responses.  I don't know if I'll be able to get in a 50m pool.  If I do, it probably won't be until the outdoor pools open, which is around Memorial day, which is like the Monday before my race.  I guess I need to relax and trust that as long as I have distance I'll be alright.  I think I'm just nervous as all get out and trying to see what I could to do eliminate the nervousness of the new situation as much as possible so I can focus on the task at hand.

just once will be fine to get used to it. don't panic. i MUCH prefer long course (50m) but after a few weeks of short course (25m) it takes a few minutes to get used to the switch.

It will seem much farther when lookin at it, but it is just that you are lookin at a length that looks like a lap.

As long as you aren't grasping the wall at each turn @25 you will be fine for the full 50, just enjoy.

The excitement and apprehension and such is half the reason I like competitions, enjoy it and get as much of it as you can.
