Subject: Double Standards and work inequity
There is a lady where I work who takes several long (over 20 min) coffee breaks every day, long lunches, comes to work late and leaves early. She does this whenever her boss is not in the office, which is to say, quite often. There are 5 support staff working in this office, which is the President's and Vice-Pesident's offices of a university college that is about to become part of one of the largest universities in Canada. Needless to say, there is a heck of a lot of work to do here.

This woman contributes 2 hours of actual work at the most every day. And no one ever complains about it, and she never gets caught, and to top it off she uses the excuse of having "personal problems" to treat all the rest of the support staff here like dirt.

It's unfair and it certainly lowers the morale of the rest of the people who work here.

I'm sick of it. Thank you for listening.

Unfotunately that's most everywhere. I say fix it the old-fashioned way, get the rest of you who are pulling your weight, drag out back and.... Just kidding. The "personal life" excuses never fly with me. "Leave your baggage at the door." That's what I would tell her. And I don't care who you are or how bad you think things are. It gives you no right to treat people like dirt. If y'all are on the same level of the hierarchy, you "weight pullers" need to have a little sit-down with her and tell her to shape up. After that, work up the chain of command 'til it gets fixed. If nothing happens after all that, then drag her out back....

Good luck!!

My wife see's other nurses where she works (not all, just a select few) come in an hour early, clock in and sit and read the paper. They're padding their paychecks and no one does anything about it. The clinic is part of a big corporate health care chain and no one cares. Any guesses why medical costs are out of control!

Nothing can be done if nobody complains. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Don't be afraid to speak up. You aren't a "rat", rather someone with integrity. Do something about it. If the outcome isn't to your liking, get another job.

Speakly strictly from a Y-chromosome perspective, anytime that person came near me, I'd have to say something like: Can't talk now, too busy covering for SLACK-@$$ES.  As the person was leaving for the day, I'd loudly comment: My day just got easier!  (Best said while they can still hear.)  Eventually, they ask if I have an issue, and I can say: With you personally, no, but I certainly don't like trying to cover YOUR work, just because you can't work the same hours as anyone else.  Then, when they figure that I've got an attitude problem, and the boss asks me what's going on, I can lay it all out.

Fortunately, I don't have to worry about that - I just have to keep my employees from slacking...

We have simple/effective ways in the military to take care of "problem" folks such as this one. Boy, were they very effective.

Those were the days.......

I hear ya!!
I had an easy out for that..... I worked in payroll.... and I'd do the adjustments, come paycheque time, there'd always be ONE complaint, from same type of person you are describing.  Not everyone can do that, so I guess (easier said than done) do your own work, & let theirs slack?!?!!?  see what happens....

And if you smoke, you get breaks all the time! while in school and such, I would wait tables and such, and my 'colleagues' were always out back.....
I have a number of habits I do not partake in while working, so just deal with it!

I spent many years (basically the '90s) in one of the most highly disciplined special operations military units around. I mean, you could actually get "fired" and shipped out to a conventional army unit if you didn't do your job to standard. It was called RFS, or "relieved for standards". Wouldn't that be nice to have in the rest of the world? "I'm sorry. You're ineffective. Pack your bags. Don't let the door hit you in the @ss on the way out."

When I got out and took a civilian job, I nearly had a stroke when I saw just the day to day laziness, incompetence, lack of attention to detail, and failure to work as a team. What was even more alarming was that mediocrity is just accepted as status quo. I would get headaches, like an icepick right in the forehead, just looking at some people! I'm convinced there is only way to deal with it, and that's to adhere to your own standards and block out what everyone else does or fails to do. It's the only way to be around people like that. Whether they get what they deserve or not, the odds are you will be rewarded for hard work. Best of luck to you. If all else fails, think of a happy place.
